Photos by Dave Smead By Elaine PERRIS, CALIF. May 23, 1970 - Somebody turned the air conditioner on Saturday night but all it seemed to do was make the riders go faster. . Lap times for all classes were averaging in the low forties, with Doug Mason turning in a forty-two, Tom Garnagan led things off as he won the first fiight of 100cc Novices. Allen Ga1lllot was second, with Robert GuY third and Mark Revels fourth, Don Frauenberger after a lay-off of a year and a half came back and proved he hasn't lost his touch, as he won the second division of 100cc Novices. New faces followed him home,including Steve Bales, Stan Petterson and Jim Yandell, Greg White and George Gellespie went round and round in the 125cc Novice class, Division One, with Greg .coming out on top, Bob Young was third and Erik Strommer fourth. Rick Doyle took the second Division of 125cc Novices aboard one of those fast Uttle Yamahas , Curti Gordon, also Yamaha mounted, was second . A few outsiders got into this Yamaha dominated class, when David Ga1lllot pushed his Bultaco to third and Chris Reimuller took f ourth on an American Eagle. Doug Mason busted loose for his first win of the night as he won the 100-175cc moto on a 125cc Yamaha. Charles Soderstrom on a Bultaco was pushing hard, but Doug has his own groove and it's pretty hard to get around him. Jamey Blunt got up to take third with David Caldwell fourth. Mike Myers and Terry Stanford went round and round in the first flight of 250cc Novices. Terry had a bit of bad luck and dropped it in the esses, so had to settle for second behind Mike. Mike Is new to Perrts but has been steadily At Perris 1 Jones improving and should do some good thing~ this season . Stew Cox didn't run out of gas as he won the second fUght of 250cc Novice. He was being pushed by long time rival Jim McKay but it was Stew's night to take home the gold and that's exactly what he did. Dong Mason and Danny Hoclde were soing some strange things on the course as they traded off the lead with regularIty in the 250cc Am .lEx. class. Both these riders are of the callber thatdon't make mistakes as even the smallest can cost you a bunch . Doug made fewer and picked up the marbles. Dean Mackelsprang and Boyd Mason played you take one and I'll take one in the Novice moto, But Dean got two out of three to make him top dog of the night. Vince Graves led the boys home in the Amateur-Expert moto after Tony Denius almost put them all in a ditch with h1s not -running-all-the-time-Harley. In the second moto, he pulled off after two laps and when the races was over he was approached by a delegation consisting of C.H. 'l'lheat; Paul Lass, Vince Graves, and Ray Tanner, asking Tony to please put the bike In the truck and take it homel Mateo's are king at Perris as all four places went to the machine. Chuck 'l'lheat was second, C.H. 'l'lheat third and Roy Grilling fourth. Doug Mason picked up Number Three for the night as he took the Sweepstake s . Hard luck awards go to Bobby Sanders, Debbie Sanders, Dennis Creason and Tony Denius. Bobby and Debbie didn't get a chance to race and Dennis and Tony just had one piece of bad luck after another.
