-'- - - Four SOO Jr. riders bunch up at Saddleback Sunday. S. (851) Rouch won the event, and W. (108) 8unell was third . CMC SERIES TIED By John Shedd ORANGE, CAL. May 24, 1970 - 'the second race of the CMC's Golden State Series was held at Saddleback Park and when the day's racing was over the series was locked in a five way tei between three Juniors and two intermediates. The track conditions were best ever for Saddleback and the new course layout met much approval from all the riders. It was overcast most of the day so the sun didn't dry thlngs out badly and dust was at a minimum. Bryar Holc omb wheeled his Penton in for the win in the 125 Ex.-Int. class, and Intermediate rider Mark Rick held down . second. Holcomb looked good in the 250 Ex.-Int. class but could not best Bultaco rider Tom Rapp who won two motosandf1n1shed second in the other. Mike Runyard was the real fireball of tne class and flew to an impressive win the first leg but in the second go his bike quit only a few yards from the checkered flag and Rapp zoomed by to take the win. Mike'S mach1ne quit again in the flnal moto and again Rapp took the win and Holcomb followed him in for second. The 500 Ex. -Int. class beglonged to San Diego's Bli Sllverthorn from start to f1n1sh. Veteran Chuck Mlnert (BSA) took the lead in the first leg with Montesa mounted Mike Runyard second and trying to get by. Sllverthorn bad a very bad start but rode his Husky like the wind and zapped the pair of front runners at one time by taking the outside of a turn. The second moto was Bli'sfrom start to f1n1sh, but in the flnal leg he agaIn came from behind to take over the lead. Ken Cooke waxed the firs t division 125 Juniors to pick up six series points and . tie him for the lead. D. Davis hustled his Bultaco in for second behind Cooke's Yamaha ' and S. Porter picked up a third on a Bultaco, Jetf Jackson pulled off the win in the first division of the 25 0 Juniors for his place in the series tie. His competition came in the form of Bultaco mounted J . Natelborg who finished second and Jim Cooke who wheeled his CZ in for third behind Jackson's haulirr Husky. The 500 Junior class went to Steve Rauch on a CZ. G. Hughes picked up second on another CZ, and Maleo rider W. Burrell brought up third . Ken Bowser'S second place f1n1sh behind J . ' Reyes in the 100 Junior class made him the third Junior tied up for the series. Dave Smith's fourth overall and first Intermediate placed h1m in the series tie along with Mike Cram who was second Intermediate in the 500 class. The third event of the series will be back at Carlsbad on June 21 . See you there.
