And the remembrances will notall be pleasant, as there were many problems with the race. The major problem was that riders could not find the course. Over two hundred and fltty riders started the 100 mile race, and It was 6 hours and 45 minutes before the leaders, J .N. Roberts and Max Switzer, crossed the finish line, literallY hand In hand. They were follow- ed by Cotton Guio, Morris Newman, and Adrian Nebeker - and that was It. Only f1ve riders compled all three loops of the coursee Cherry Creek Is traditlonally .a rough race and a finishing list of 15% would be extremely high. ThIs year, however, many riders found themselves beaten not by the course, but rather by their inability to find the check-points. In addition the pits were confusion, and there was a false start to mar the beginning of the race. Despite all the problems, though, there can be no detracting from the glory of those five riders who managed to finish. Almost every possible type of terrain that exists can be found within a few miles of Cherry Creek- sagebrush flats complete with deep washes, mountains with steep rocky uphills and frightening downh111s, fire roads and forests, miles ·· of the softest sand th1s side of the Sahara, and even some water to cross. The course covers It all. To ride Cherry Creek and f1n1sh Is the mark of a rider, par excellence. ,..; ; Sweepstakes wmner, CalI!ornlan J .N.
