HClauss Blasts Volcano MX I Death Valley Run Founder Dies - ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. May 10, 1970 - Albuquerque's Bob Clauss rode his 400cc Maico to victory over U.S. Champion Gary Bailey in the open class of of the Expert division at Volcano Cliffs Motocross Park. Clauss powered the big Maico the lead the field in all three heats of the heavyweight event to . earn the number one trophy. In the 125cc Expert division , Californian Gary Bailey led all three heats to win that d iv ision. Jack Arrington of Albuquerque received second place honors, toltowed by Kelly Corbett, another Albuquerque competitor. In the 250cc event were: tst: Steve Chavez; 2nd: Stan Johnson; 3rd: Jack Arrington, all Albuquerque riders. Clauss, whose riding career began just one year ago, has been the lead- ing regional contender since his first race and is high point rider in the area. Among them, the Southern Cal1fornia Road Rider's Committee was created in 1954. The RRC is st1ll operating and as a group has advanced the cause of road riding In the Southland more than any other single group or activity. Seldom remembered, Harley Rathbun was the father of the famous Death Valley Run which became the largest road rally In the world. It started as a dealer promotion with 18 Southland dealers and sportsmen including such per" sonages as Skip Fordyce, Joe Walker, and Dick Hutchins.
