- WELLS SETS NEW_HBCP RECO"RD CIl ~ os c.. By Eddie Smith CI) ~ HUNTINGTON BEACH, CAL, May 24, 1970 - Thirteen year old Gary Wells of Phoenix, Arizona .set a new track record at 42.8 seconds. Young Wells was riding ~ a 250 Yamaha in his record run. t...> After the regular schedule of races was over they ran a spec1al Sweepstakes race. The top two bikes from each class ran in the race. The race was run in the opposite direction then the regular races. Mike Van Acken was the winner of the Sweepstakes race on his Triumph. Gary Wells placed second on hls Yamaha. Mike Curoso riding a Bultaco won the 250 Novice Main Event over John Sperry. Sperry who was mounted on an Ossa stayed right on curosc-s heels the entire race. ' Curoso won his heat race. Mike jumped into the lead at the start, but the race had to be restarted because of an acctdent. Jim Shipman got out of shape going into the first turn and flipped his bike. He had a possible broken leg. John Sperry also won his heat race very eastly, Sperry was challenged by 2:; [oJ ..,J . Mike Van Acken also riding a Triumph was second• The 100cc Novice Main Event winner was Steve Stanfield. Stanfield who was riding a Kawasaki jumped into the lead right at the start. Mike Thomas placed . second on his Kawasaki. " Steve Gerke started the day o!f on a sour note. Riding a :;>uzuki in the 100heat race, Steve tangled with another bike then flipped several times. He was taken to the hospital with a broken wrist. Keith Hueth won the 125 Novice Main with Steve Hurrera placing second. Keith was riding a Bultaco while Steve was mounted on a Yamaha. Kawasaki mounted Kirk Reding won the 125 Elqlert moto, Dennis Hanson placed second while Gary Wells took third. The TT bikes will be back at Huntington Beach Cycle Park on Sunday, June 14th. Racing starts at 11 a.m, (Results on page 31) Weather And Racing Hot in Hanford By Jack Light HANFORD, CALIF., May 15, 1970Tonight's series of races matched the weather - hot. Today was perhaps the hottest day of the year, with tonight's weather cooling o!f somewhat, but with the riders never" cooling it" at any time. ices found Homer Taylor and his Yamaha looking real good. fonowed by Howell Johnston, Bultaco mounted to take second, Ron Tobey. 125 Elqlert, after losing in the heat, came back to take the Main with style more becoming to the Distrclt 35 Number 1 rider. A real quick Niel McDonald pushed Ron to take the Arnateur ,fir s t spot in this combined event. The first heat of the 650 Elqlerts continued along in the same manner. Six riders went into the first sweeper full bore, with only Carroll Jackson and Sonny McCohlugh escaping a four rider pile-uP, being just a little ahead at this point. Jim McCracken, Lannie Mays, Darrell McCaulley and Jlrn Chisim all going down in a pUe of machines and men. All were able to continue in the Main. however. The 250 Novices put on some of the most exciting racing of the night, with the Main Event having four different leaders. The final tally had the Bultaco of Ron Forbes crossing first, followed very closely bY Wayne Howard, Yamaha, Russ Barnett, Ossa, John Saltzmen, Kawasaki, and flfth place man Bob Perreira, Bultaco making uP the front runners in this huge class of hotshoes. Charles Goodrich and his Mote-Beta bested the field of 90 Novices to take the winner's gold, with Tom Jones riding his Suzuki for a close second. The 125 Nov- The race of the night had to be the 250 Amateurs, with a battle of the Montesas with Tom Tomlinson, and motecrosser Carl Nelson putting on a real . duel with their new machines. This was Carl's first scrambles race on the new bike and after some gearing changes will be even more competitive. Jack Dodds kept uP his usual tlne riding with a close third on his Bultaco, leading the other BSA bikes for the win in the 650 Novice . Amateur DonHarrell, BSA, showed the way for Bob Owens, Triumph, and Alan Haydon riding another Beezer.
