iCAL FOU RACE ~ By B111 Spencer r.:! :i!: GARDENA, CA ., May 14, 1970 - It was r.:! Mike Haney, 48r, who came out best in the final Thursday night Ascot TT~ :.. Eddie Mulder led off the 15-lap Maln U and appeared relatively assured of a victory until about lap three when a plug came undone and sprayed the rear wheel with 011 creating a rather s!1Ppery surface of hls own. Haney got the inside !lne on Mulder and pulled away to' a comfortable margin. Two laps later Skip Van Leeuwen drew a bead on Mulder's slowlng Triumph and got by exiting the half-mile turn. From there on 1t was pretty much follow the leader. Fourth went to Dallas Baker, and fUth to B111 Manley, who hid spent a fe w laps in second and third. The combined Am /Ex. prgram was indeed a nice change although It will probably not be seen aga1n as 1t relies on low entries . d First Amateur finisher was John Hateley who appeared to have had some sort of problem gettlng going. Once he got with the program he looked like the same John Hateley who has won so many prevtous Amateur Mains. Skip Van Leeuwen won the Trophy Dash with relative ease over Mulder, Haney and Baker . The Novice Dash went to Kenny Roberts who put the banzaJ on Gary Scott when Scott Inched hlm out of the first turn. The Maln was turned around with Scott taking the checkered when Roberts Was put in the third r ow for creeping out too far for the starter's liking. When Roberts was pointed toward the rear, the opinion expressed was in no uncertain terms and when Roberts passed into third spot he was given a hearty round of applause . GARDENA, CA., May 15, 1970- Dewayne Keeter, 44x, no newcomer to the fast ways of the Ascot Half-mile, had little d1ff1culty w1nn1ng the 15-lap fe ature after a beautiful pass on the inside of the first turn on Jim Odom, Odom led off with Paul Consierre, 9r, close in tow followed by Keeter. On the fourth lap Keeter made his move on Consierre, and after the pass drew .a bead on the fast movlng odom , It was lap eleven when Keeter made the move on Odom and that all she wrote. Sammy Tanner and Trophy Dash wlnner Mel Lacher, diced throughout the whole affair with Tanner coming out on toP. in the Amateur Ma1n Rick Holley (who qual1fied f or the TrOPhy Dash) came from second place to wln by a comfortable margin over John Hateley, and Kris Bakke. Kenny Roberts had no d1tficulty in out distancIng the Novlce field on his Twln Suzuk1 in both his heat and the Maln . Thls young man Is a fantastic rider and a sight to watch on any track. (Results on page 26) SIDE HACKS PUT ON A SHOW The Side-Hack Assn. put on a demonstration of their skllls on the TT track for the Ascot F r i day night crowd and the gladiator battle was won by Dave Roesch / Terry Benge on a H-D. The second place crew of Dean Hummer/Rolan Gulbransen l ed 1t most of the way as they usually do, but succumbed in the righthander after the Jump.
