May 17, 197~ Tom Poteet, 250Cc Bultaco, took the lead at the smoke bomb Sunday and held ltall the way, for his third overall win this year at the Foothill Hawks Hare Scrambles. Larry Bergquist, on another Bultaco, was second and took first 500 class. Keith Collier, the first Novice in on his Yamaha 250, probably summed uP the race saying, "man, am I glad to see the finish line. I hit so many rocks and I got lost twice but found the tra1l right away. I am so tired I couldn't go another mile." 3RD DESERT WIN The course was forty miles around, and crossed under the freeway twice, with lots of wild drop ofts, and rocks. The starting area was fast, as Poteet headed out for two loops that would take him two hard hours. Bergquist dtdn't have it quite so easy as he had to work uP from about fourth to pick uP his second overall. Mike Patrick took third on a new 360 Yamaha, followed by Phil Bowers on a 250 Yamaha. Jon Thomas came out for the first time this year and brought his big Triumph in for a seventh overall and first Open class. Dennis Pierce was the first Amateur in on a 250 Yamaha, but at the finish line the only thing he could say Is "where Is the water." Craig Rufi was the second Amateur, also on a 250 Yamaha. Keith Collier was first Novice, with second going to MIke Brooks on a 250 Husky. Chet Wh1lchel was the first 125, and KeIth Starforth took first 500 Novice on a Ducati, Jack Morgan took over the lead In the l00cc class at the second check from Ken Buckspan, who jumped oft a bank and collapsed his pegs.
