. zoso PARK, CALIF. !\lay 10,1970- The. U Ker n County Trailblazers M.C. once again put on a " Big League" Motocross, with many s uper stars, s tars, and rookies making the llne- ups . 143 riders appeared to try their various skills on the demanding Poso Park course, changed somewhat from the last event. The ess turns have been replaced with a tricky high speed jump added, and the off camber turn has been lengthened. Don Kepley s ta rted things off by winning the 100 Jr. class, r iding his Harley Davids on for two seconds and a first In the final mot o. Don Eide a nd his Hodaka pi cked up enough points for an ove r all second. The 125 Jr. I divis ion had Richard Fo shay toolin g his Sachs across fi r s t in all three motos, with Tom Garrett, Yamaha making up for lost ti me In the last two times out for second. The 125 Jr. II was a real battle with Henry F ull er out pointing' Jerry Johnson One man whoadded a little International flavor to the day's events had everything going his way In the 125 Sr. class. Lars Larson took all that Poso had to offer In stride, riding a pote nt Penton In for three fir s t places. The battle here was for the other places, with Mike David Sachs, duellng with Ran dy Ptepkorn on a Yamaha. The 250 Jr. I had Don Wa tkin s J r. outc lassing the balance of the field, on his Montesa. The real race was for second, third and four th spots . Doug Wheeler (C- Z) had his hands full with Jack KIng , also C-Z mounted, and Jeff Johnson riding Cus tom Engineering's Suzuki . David Williams and his Yamaha had a three for three day also s weeping the 250 J r . II division, followed by Joe Cushaway C-Z, with one third, and two seconds . J ohn Gr osslni (C- Z) by virtue of three solid seconds , pr oduced poin ts enough for firs t overal l in the Senior 250, with Mike Runyard af ter a tough luck, first moto , se ve nth place, coming back strong to pick up firs t places the last two ti mes out. John and Mike put on a r ace tha t many will be talking about for s ome ti me to come . A large field of Open Juniors was' led across the finish by Joel C. Kyne, Mateo, The Open Sr. class provided the desert , for a menu of excellent racing today. The " Hot- shoes'" of motocrosslng were here in full force. Bob Grossi r ides his Husky as If he will not settle for anything but fi r s t, and this is what he did; three for three. Lars Larson, after two seconds on his Maico, had a large margin in the final, when his machine " jus t s topPed" , in his own words. Mark Blackwell and his Husky, ,foll owed by Mike Runyard and his Montesa, with Steve Benedict and Way ne Garrett making up this group of fantastic riders. May 8,1970Many riders and spectators arrived here tonight, not knowing just what to expect from this new "Rocky-Hill Speedway" T .T. Scrambles course. The Porterville Spinners M.C. haveputtogetheramotorcycle race track designed to one of the quickest scrambles track to . be found anywhere. The newly laid course Is apprJdmately 4110ths of a mile around, with no actual slow places at all. The two huge sweepers, with the long straight provide the flyers an opportunity to really turn it on, one sl1ght dip coming Into the Infield is the only " half- fast" portion o! the entire layout. The s mall bikes seem well suttee to this ne w track, it does not seem possible that they can scoot so fast, Tom Jones proved this point with his super quick Suzuki In winning the l00cc Novi ce . The three front runners In the 100 Amate ur go around put on one of the fin est race of the night, tight and close. Curt Lang e Kawasaki, Neil McDonal d Moto- Beta, with Kyle Lessley making np the threesome . Homer Taylor and his Yamaha bested Maurice Pritchett with his hard charging Sachs to win the 125 Novice class. " Easy- Rider Ron" Tobey made it look real easy In outclassing the combined 125, Amateur/Expert aboard his ultra fast" Shafter :Ya maha" • Rod Pires and Steve Baker made this a real race to watch. Second spot was never In the bag for either one, until the final few yards, with Rod tooling his Yamaha In ahead of Steve, also r iding a Yamaha. Randy Matthews (21) and his Bridgestone diced back and forth with the Bultaco of B1l1y Loflin for the clos est race of the night: The 200 NovJAm. These two were never more than a few feet apart, so close either one could have steered the other's bike, and that is close. In the 250 Amateur Main~ Jim Keener put on a little more throttle to finish ahead of Jack Dodd Bultaco, followed by brother Mike Keener on their Yamahas of Keener Cycle Center. Powder Puff winner EJalneSmlth(182) who only rides the fast tracks around, proved why, she likes to turn it on and go •••this she did. The likes of George Holland and Ken Hale made Steve Snider work hard tonight for his 250 Expert win. The big bikes were next brought out, starting with the 500 Novices , which Joe Chel1lno showed the way around" with Tim Conklin following on his BSA. Tim's brother Hank, won the 500Amateur riding his BSA. The Open Novices put on a real crowd pleaser with hometowner, Ed Williams bringing his BSA In for the checkers. In the final event Carr oll Jackson really flew to take the Main. Rick Newby r iding the Custom Engineering Triumph kept Jackson twisting all the harder, R,ick won the semi, a nd was out for a repeat, just could not close the gaP. Alan Haydon BSA finished ,third. (Results on page 26) CITY OF HOPE ACCEPTS CHECK FROM RRC By H.J. Eble At its May meeting the Road Riders Committ ee presented a check for over $3,980 to Mel Heininger a representative of the City of Hope Medical Center In Duarte, Cal. The donated money was raised by the RRC In the recent City of Hope tour held In Ridgecrest where many road riding clubs participated. Heininger praised the RRC and the mem ber clubs for their efforts and work on behalf of the faciliti es In Duarte.
