"'> PIPING HOT SCOTTIS'HTRIALS Cl> it c, Story and Pictures by Ron Schneiders SAN DIEGO , CAL . May 17, 1970- The San Diego Trials Riders challenged 120 entrants to finish their version of the Scottish Trials In the highlands of San Diego. Only 52 met the challenge. A Scottish Trials differs from the more common EngUsh trials by requiring the riders to follow a prescribed course, visiting each section In the proper sequence and In a specified time period. In this eve nt the course was a fourteenmile loop wi th twenty sections which had to be traversed twice. The time allowed f or comple tion of the two laps was an ample f our hours. The Joker In the deck was the unexpected and unseasonable heat. When the course was laid out last week, the area, actually part of a San Die go city park, was vert wet. The sections were designed to take advantage of this feature . During the week the course dried out and many of the section became considerably easier. The heat, however, restored the balance. Temperatures of well over 100 degree were recorded In the pit area, and it was estimated tha t it was even hotter In some of the dry holes out on the course. Several riders and at l east one checker suffered mild heat prostration and had to be cooled off with liquid both Internally and externally. Payse Tops Motocross Many of the non-flnlshers blamed the heat. One Expert claimed, after completing the first loop, that he was as exhausted as he usually was after a 100mile enduro. The difficulty of the course and the heat was also reflected In the relatively high scores of the winners. Overa! winner and winner of the masters' class was John Walte r s with 73 points. Bob Ni ckelson and Kevin Walter followed with 76 and 79 points, respectively. In the Expert class Mark Eggar was the winner with 86 points, Jim Clark with 102 points and Dewayne Blazer with 103 took secon d and third place In that class. The Amateurs were divided Into two classes by engine size. In the UltraUght class Jeff Koskie was tops with 110 points. Bruce Lanlhar, 119, was second, and Jim Phillips, 149, was third . In 'the Ughtwelght class Danny Kiedrowski with 100 points was the winner. Dale Ranta with 101 points was second, and Gary Harris with 113 was lh1rd. The event was very capably run. Strict attention was pald to the fire service spark-arrestor r egulation. No bikes were allowed on the course without them . An enterprising dealer brought a selection of spark arrestors to the meet to sell to anyone In need. The bikes were impounded at sign-up and thus the riders 3t '-l were actually abl e to hear what was sald at the riders' meeting. A welcome change. By Mike Capallte 'eft A/fJstef HUNTINGTON BEACH, May 17-Runn1ng against 250' s and 500's In the Expert class, Mike Pasey showed them the way around on his 125 Bultaco, Although the classes were scored and trophied separately, they were run as one race In each moto. To further add Insult to the bigger bikes, sec ond place In each of the motos went to another rider In the same class, Lloyd Qu1ntard on a Yamaha. The course Is a short tight one, but the track owner,' Don England again changed the layout of the track as he does every race to keep the racing different and interesting, and lh1s time the big machines had a longer straight to use their power. In the first all Expert moto, It looked Uke Lloyd Qulntard was going to take It f rom Pasey as Lloyd led it all the way up to the last lap when Mike took the lead away and cr oss ed the line for the win. The next two motos, Mike . wasn'l taking any chances and he went wire to wire for the wins . After the regular program had been run, the promoter staged a grand sweepstakes race for the first two winners In each class, but as an added handicap for being an Expert against the Juniors, Payse had to start the race facIng the wrong way. On the third lap, Mike had taken the l ead over with Qu1ntard right behind him as he came home for the win and the $15.00 added prize for this race.
