Forest Service Regional Headquarters:
" We are pleased to continue to wor k
with the Sier ra Club and othe r Interested
groups. However, based on careful study
of all the statements r ec eived from the
publlc, evaluation of the r esources and
conditions of the area, and our experience as professional land managers
under the guidelines set by Congress, I
have decided that the or1ginal conclusion
was proper. I am upholding the decision
made by Forest Supervisor Hank Branagh
to manage the northern portion of the
Granite Chief area for backcountry recreation and the southern portion for
full resource use."
A key fa ctor In the ForestSupervisor's
dec ision was the fact that 40 percent of
the land In the Granite Chief Ar ea Is
privately owned. Mor eover , the area
offers opportunIUes for future recreational use on porUons of NaUonal Forest
land needed to meet the increasing public
demand for family camping , fishing.
hunting, and sightseeing .
Delnema went on to say, " Beca us e of
our concern for unstable soUs and watershed protection In the northern portion
of Granite Chief, I have already es ta blished the ' Granite Chief Motor Vehicle
Closure' which prohiblt1s cross-country
use of motor ized vehicles on 20.400
acres." The only entry Into this area will
be either by foot or horseback.
Two million acres; or 10 percent of
the National Forest land In canrornia,
consist of WIlder ness and other lands
under study by the Forest Service for
inclusion Into the WIlderness System.
