V,) S tz:I :c: tz:I ...:l U :>.. u LOS ANGELES, CAUF . - After a year of rellabIDty tesUng, the Los Angeles Police Department has ordered 85 Italian Moto Guzzis, as part of their previously Harley-Davidson dominated fleet of more than 500 motorcycle patrol JIIlits, ac cording to Gerald " Ray" Wynne, director of police transportation. Additionally, Wynne said that the department has placed an order with Pacific Coast Honda in Lomita, Calif. for 11, specially equipped, Honda 750' s . In the year long test of the 10 Italian bikes, Wynne said his department found that maintenance costs have been " about the same" as the Harley-Davidson's. However, he said the initial cost of the Guzzi is " cons ider ably cheaper" than the big 74's. He added that there was no "major component" failures during the Moto Guzzis test. If they prove satisfactory, tile police department wlll order a number of them as part of the regular fleet, the director of police transportation said. According to Information from Pacific Coast Honda, a new facIDty is being planned for the police 750 set-up and service . The set- up of the machines includes a solo seat instead of the banana seat; addition of a radio mount on the rear fenders; brackets for saddlebags ; re-allgning the mufflers so the saddlebags can fit low; a major modification to the speedometer; rewiring of the electrical system to accommodate the many electronic components found on police motorcycles; modification in the frame to allow for the installation of a larger battery; and repainting of the machine. A new wrinkle in carburetor design has been released to the retall market by the Lake Research and Development of Lake Isabella, Cal, The Lake Injector looks like one of those mysterious "little black boxes " we've all heard about but in reality the unit is an " exer cis e in simplicity", . Basically the injector ls a black annodized aluminum box with a velocity s tack on one side and a flang e mount on the other, (A hose mount is optional.) Inside, a slide with a hole in it that corresponds to the venturi size controls the air flow. The fuel inlet pipe moves up and down with the slide and the pipes relation to a stationary metering needle Is what controis the flow of fuel . There are four different needles available and the needle pos ition in the cub body Is adjus table via two knobs at the bottom of the body. Here's how It works: The slide, operated " by a throttle cable, Is r ais ed or lower ed to Increase or decrease the flow of air. The fuel induction pipe ls raised or lowered, with the slide, which increases or decreases the flow of fuel. The correct mixture is obtained bY ' adjusti ng the patented needle whUe the engine ls running, so that the proper amount of fuells mixed with the"air flow in the venturi, That's alll There are no float bowls , or levels, also no pr imary, secondary or main jets to be bother ed with. The Lake injector does not have to be mounted vertically to function properly. It can be mounted in any position that will facllltate hooking up the throttle cable and fuelllne. . • The heart of the Lake injector ls the needle. It differs fr om mostcarb needles in that it has a flat taper mUled on one side, The flat s ide is very wide at the end of tile needle and taper s away to nothing about 2/3 of the way down Its length. The basic mixture ratio adjustment ls made by turning the large knob that raises or lowers the needle. . When the engine is tuned for maxlmum power with the slide fully open then the smaller knob Is adjusted to twis t the needle to tune for mid- range and low end power , • 100 'S' ".~ Pretty simple.
