April 19, 1970- <: Adverse weather no doubt kept many of r.J the r iders and spectators away today, ...:l but the zeal and enthusiasm of those on ~ hand, provided an excellent day of T. T. U Scrambles racing and watching. 135 r ide r s' were present to compete and talent was plentiful in all classes. After the dust of the various heats and semi 's had settled, a day of serious racing began. Vince Foster (Yamaha), after the long trip ba ck fr om Chowchilla, looked real fresh in wlnning the 125 Novice class, startlng a long string of Yamaha victories. Yamaha riders collected the hard- CLEAN HOUSE ATBAKERSfIELD ware in the 125 Novice , 125 Amateur, 125 Expert, 250 Novice, and except for a spin out, a possible first in the 250 Expert. The girls of the Powder Puff class had to run with the 125 Novice class today , and would you believe, CarolRandalland her Yamaha out-classed many of the men riders for a real quick fourth place? Ron Tobey contlnued his w1nn1ng ways on his Shafter Yamaha, In taking both the l25cc heat and the main with ease. A serious start-crash marred the race, as five or s ix r iders piled UP. There wer e no Injuries, and all equipment was r eady to go again after the restart. Art Carter (Bultaco) fr om Ventura had a thing going with Mike Caylor (Bridge- stone) in the 175-200 Novice Amateur, with each taklng a victory In his respective division. The 250 Novices put on a real good show, with Rick Biddle and his Yamaha showing the way for hard charging B1ll Payne (CoZ), and Shawn Leopold (Ossa). The 250 Amateur class provided the sleeper of the day. Wayne Schmidt (Yamaha), Ron Keener (Yamaha) and Pete W11l1s (Bultaco) put on a r eal crowd pleaser, very close, and anyone's race until the final checkered fell. The wildes t and certainly the mos t unpredictable event of the day was the 250 Expert Main . J immy Maxwell and George Holland put on a r ace of races. Jim was involved in a number of near misses, and rather than making actual contact, he chos e to " ball out" over the berm. The 350/500 combined found Malco rider Ron Ely victorious over Henry Conklin (BSA) in a real tight duel. Motocrosser Ely seems to have found the groove In Scrambles racing, and looks real good . . ' • The Open Novi ce found Tom Lynch (Triump h) pitt ed against the very fast Royal-Enfie ld of Bill Sklnner. The two were as clos e as a postage stamp and a letter most of the day. The Open Expert class had some real fast Ir on in the hands of Carr oll Jackson (Triumph) and Rick Ne wby, r iding Custom ' Engtneer tng-s beautifully prepared Triumph. Rick managed to hold off Carroll for a couple of laps, then Jackson twisted a Uttle harder, going by Newby and fin ally capturing the checkered. Darrell McCaulley (BSA) was third overall. Promoter Bob Bailey announced racing will be held May 3r d, 10th, 17th, and 24th. As cot's fam ed mud w1ll be toned down so mewhat and will be partially r eplaced by longe r, faster straightaways. The cour s e will be virtually identi cal to tha t used for the Asc ot Team Motocr os s . Sever al changes will l!.e made fr om last year 's format . Spectators will get in a t a lowered p r ice, $2.95 or $2.45 with the discount coupons available in thi s paper . P r ac tice, aa.m , to 10:30, will be open to sp ectators for fr ee. Post entries of $5.00 w1ll replace last year's mail entries . Ascot' s pit gates will open at 7 a.m , and promoter Bailey said riders will be fully insured, a feature found at few other events.
