Lawwill To Defend Cumberland Championship National riders from all sections of the country will compete in the AMA 20-lap national championship race at Cumberland, Maryland, on May 3,1970. The entry llst is highlighted by such dirt track stars as Bart Markel, Gary Nixon, Dick Mann, ana the current AMA Grand National Champion, Mert Laww1.ll. Laww1.ll will return to the Cumberland 1/2 mUe dirt track and attempt to repeat his winning performance of last year. The Cumberland event, his first win of the 1969 season, gave Mert an early jump on the point lead. He continued his winning style to win the Grand National Champion title. Mert began his professional racing career in 1963. At the end of that season, Mert was ranked in 22nd position in the officlal point standings. The following year, Lawwill finished in 9th place. Since that time, he has earned a llsting am ong the top 10 rated Nati onal riders. During the 1969 season, Mert finished in 23 'of the 25 scheduled National events. Of the 23 finishes, Mert gained points in 19 and, he wonfour championships; three of his wins were on 1/2 mUe dirt ovals and the other was a TT event. This year, Mert Lawwill has the added pressure of defending his #1 position. Already, though, Mert has finished first in the national indoor short track at the Houston Astrodome on February 8, 1970, and he is looking for a repeat win at Cumberland; The action begins on Saturday, May 2, at 1:00 with Amateur and Elqlert qua11fying time trlals . Sunday's race pr~ram gets under way at 1:30 with 2 Amateur, 10 lap heats 'an d 3 Elqlert, 10 lap heats. The af ternoon continues with a 5 lap, Expert semi and the day is concluded with a 14 lap Amateur. final and the 20 lap National event . Speedway Baff'es Resume At fairgrounds COSTA MESA, CALIF . - Speedway motorcycle racing at the Orange County Fairgrounds Stadium will resume action next F riday night, May 1st with a cast of top fllght cycle racers including the same cast that fough t it out for the National Championship last October. Young Steve Bast of Van Nuys, Calif., will be defending his championship crown against Rick Woods, of Huntington Beach, Calif., Larry Heinsleman of Santa Moni- , ca, Calif., Sonny Nutter of Culver City, canr., Don Hawley of Lawndale, Calif., and Eddie Mulder of Burbank, Calif. The nineteen year old Bast, will not only have a full field of very experienced racers to contend with, but his own brother Mike Bast, also of Van Nuys, Calif., who has displayed his ability to challenge his older brother. At the r ecent Lancaster event, Lauer e mer ged the winner of the Class " B" event shoWing exceptional wility. • Broadsliding motorcycle racers became one of the Orange County attractions on Friday night at the County Fairgrounds oval Iasrseason and it is expected that interest has increased 100% from last Fall. Racing will get under way at the Fairgrounds at 8 pm Friday night after opening ceremonies. A complete race schedule of 0 events will be presented including special match races , Best Pairs and the ever popular handicap events where the better riders are forced to start 40 to 50 yards behind the starting barrier. FUllng the gap somewhere between the Ace 100 and the Super Rat the new Ace 100- B is sort of a Super Rat with lights and a muffler . Before designing the new machine PABATCO polled some 10,000 trail riders about how they thought a trall bike should be bunt. This project was undertaken by Hodaka in 1969 and the results have guided them in the design of the New Hodaka ACE 100-B. The many varied and often humorous replies received by Hodaka were all categcrfzed and tabulated to provide the most asked for features by this cross section of motorcyclists . The survey disclosed that the machine must be versatile, light weight and have good horsepower; the se were the foremost qua11fications . Long travel suspension on front and rear were close behind. Durability and parts ava1la b1l1ty came next in the criteria. Tubular steel frame, 19 inch front wheel and 18 inch rear fitted with some type of good traction tread, wide and tough fenders , five speed transmission, folding footpegs, cross-braced handlebars, quick detach lights and speedometer fairly well summed up the most asked for items . _ To make a long story short, Hodaka bunt the machine and included all of the items plus a few more. The ACE 100 engine's horsepower is more than able to handle the 183 lb. unit. With this host of improvements and the now-legendary Hodaka rellWility the 100-B sets an example of what a street-trail bike should be.
