DAVIS NABS SADDLEBACK TRIALS By G. L . Barton ORANGE, CALIF. AprU 26,1970- Despite a cool, blustery day, competition was really hot among nearly 180 riders at Sunday's Trials event held at Saddleback Park today. Staged by the Southern CaU!ornia Trials Association, over 100 Amateurs, 40 plus women and kids and 30 Expert! Master riders made up the brunt of the competition. Eight Amateurs, eight Master/Expert sections and 5 women and kids traps, -around a two .mUe, 4-lap loop greeted the riders. Competition among all class- Asco' Half-Mi'e A lo1ontesa rider tackles some of the rough stuff at the S.C.T.A. trails Sunday at Saddleback .Park. Nearly 200 riders _e on hand for the competition. Sandwiched between Davis and Nlchelsen was SCTA prexy, Bob Grove (Bultaco). Expert class winner was Richard Bledwoe, for the fifth straight time. This win w1ll bump Bledsoe (Bultaco) Into the Master class, which should be interestIng, as Rich's score was only one point more than Davis ', at 52. points leader, Gary Scott. The Montesa r ider from Merced seems to find little d1fflculty with the track or the competition at Ascot, as he's managed three out of four victories in two weeks of TT and Flat Track competition at Gardena's raceway• . Kenny Roberts, tb1s time on a Suzuki, became the first Novice to win both the TT and the half mUe Novice final in a week. ' Roberts looked as smooth on the oval as he did on the TT to score the win. Opening night winner, Gary Scott, came up with engine troubles in the heat race and did not make the final. Roberts' Suzuki was chased to the win by a pair of Yamahas, with Bob Hill second and Loyal Penn continuing to Improve with a close third• The new Ascot dry sliding surface Is br1ng1ng entirely new racing to Ascot. Rockwood and LawwUl had seven laps in the 22 second bracket, even though the track Is much drier than ever before.
