Aprll 26, 1970Rookie Expert Dave Aldana (BSA) socked it to the old pros here again Sunday, winning the 50 lap, 75 mlle, TT race in one hour, four mInutes and 18.94 seconds. Aldana, currently tied for eighth in the National standings, beat second place finisher, National Number ' One, Mert Lawwill (H-D), to the tlnish line by more than 20 seconds. The .Main Event was slightly delayed as, tlrst Aldana, then Sonny Burres, ' needed some last minute help, When the flag of Hoy Odom went UP, it was fast qua1Itier, Mark Brelsford, first and Aldana a close second. Burres and Laww111 were also close in for third and fourth. After three go-arounds, Bresltord had pulled into a fairly comfortable, 3 sec. lead and kept it up unt11lap 13, when the gas tank on his Sportster started do!rig a dance . He tried to hold It down but rIding the bIke and holding down the tank didn't mIX. and he bailed on the rIght The 'seventy-five mlle affair was the longest steeplechase recorded, but early worries about how fuel and balding tires seemed to be unfounded, as only a handful of riders refueled. On lap 16, Aldana peered into his tank going down the straightaway, and was apparently sanstied with the shoshing sound. La wwill looked quite tired after the race, but Dave Hansen seemed in great shape, which was more then could be said for his machine. The J .C. Agajanian promotion was Indeed an attair to remember, as the morning hours of practice were held under threatening skies, and qua1Itying for the Amateurs brought a full fledged rain. Along about Main Event time, the sun appeared and as the crowd of 5400 started home for the day, the temperature rose to the sixties. In the 10 lap Amateur go, John Hateley got by Don Emde on the second lap and proceeded to haul a way. Hateley kept uP the pace until the yellow showed, and then Emde started to close uP the gap, bander after the second jump. Dusty Coppage, passed him into third place on the next lap, and Brelsford decided to call it a day. At the end of four teen laps it stood, Aldana, Laww111, Coppage, Jim adorn and Dave Hansen. Shortly thereafter adorn 's primary chain gave UP, and he par ked on the front straightaway. Coppage InherIted second from Mert, only to disappear for a few laps. He was never in contention from there on. The rest of the race was relatively quiet, with Aldana fIrst, followed by Mert, Dave Hansen, Sonny Burres and Tom Rockwood• Third went to Terry Dorsch. Second fastest Amateur qul1t1er, Al Kenyon, led ott his heat easily through the first jump, when a plug foule d, putting him on the side lines for the day. His Bob Selt, Sportster. will have to wait for another day. Tod Sloane went on to win that race and would have been in great shape in the Main it only he hand't balled. The NovIce MaIn was for 5 laps and Gary Scott, rode hIs Bultaco to another win, thIs time over Modesto's Stan Anderson.
