TOP NAMES IN AT·HANGTOWN Story by Dave Loop Photos by Bob KraIt PLYMOUTH, CAL., April 4 and 5, 1970 - Dusty Plymouth Raceway was the meeting ground for many of the f inest motocrossers in the west this weekend. Top stars such as Dick Mann, John De Soto, Hans Hansen and Lars Larsen captured the enthustastic crowd with their famous riding ab1l1ties. Northern Ca11fornia favorites such as Bob Grossi and Brad Lackey showed that Southern Ca11for nia and points east have no monopoly on motocross talent. I n fact, Grossi was the man of the day, winning the 500 Open class overall and two of the three motos outright. John DeSoto grabbed an early lead in the first race, but lost it when he popped out of gear in a rolling section of the course. Then it was Grossi (Hus) and Hansen (Hus) racing for the flag in a fashion that brought the crowd to its feet. Hansen won the moto, but Grossi's press made Hansen's victory much less than a gut. The second 500 Open race featured some of the afternoon's best action. Wheel-to-wheel dicing between Hansen and Mike Runyard ( Montesa) was extremely exciting as they worked to catch Grossi and DeSoto. The most interesting race Saturday was a 250 Junior clash that saw Don Malley (Hus) and Mike Rendich (Montesa) . exchange the lead five times. This was to the ultimate f rustration of Malco mounted Chris Carter, who made continual bids but had to settle f or third. For the day, Chris was first . fans with tills charee Into th. first turn. All in all, the Hangtown motocross weekend was a hit with the spectators and a real workout for the riders. The long, dusty course choked the racers wh1le It beat them to death, and most competitors agreed that the course was really tough. The success of the event was due 10 great part to the efforts of the D1rtd1ggers North Motorcycle Club. They promoted the event heavily, and when raceday came they provided quick results for the riders and adequate concessions and sanitation for everyone there. Brad was very fast and paced himself well, two invaluable assets in the fast company riding the Hangtown event. Hans Hansen was overall winner of the 250 Senior event on a Husqvarna, but runner-up Mike Runyard (Monte sa) became the favorite of the crowd. Mike did a spectacular endo in front of the crowd in the first lap of the third 250 moto, The race was restarted, and Mike proved his super-spill hadn't bothered him by winning the moto going away. Both 125 classes were run on Saturday, and the Senior honors went to Lars Larsson. Lars pushed his Penton to the limits to hold off hard charges by Pat De Benedetti (Am. Eagle) and Gary Bailey (Sachs).
