KNOW Kelvin finished it ott and says it now tor sale. The tront torks resemble recent Greeves " banana" , or " spr inger forks " except that they are turned backwards. That makes them " tra1l1ng link" and they look very strong. They have to be. Because ot sidecar' s inherrent tendencyto have all three wheels shear ott in opposite directions, all components (especially torks and wheels ) are under territic stress. That's why there is more to it than just bolting a chair to your old 40 incher. Successtul motocross sidehacks are des igned tor that purpose trom the tloor UP. The " bike" part ot the rig wouldn't make a practical solo mount. Unlike r oad racing kneelers, the hack is bolted to the trame rather than welded uP as a unit. The third wheel has its own swing arm and spring/shock unit. Passenger accommodations include a cushioried seat over the wheel, a grab bar bent into strategic locations on the outboard side and a single toot peg on the opposite side ot the bike. The fiberglass tank, seat and panels were finished in yellow which set ott Kelvin's fiat hlack Triumph engine and the nickle plated trame. We were lots impressed and a little apprehensive. It f\.... ~o:; r a tew years ot dirt riding It beeasy to think that riding a motorcycle is something that comes naturally. When you tigure that you have mastered the s ubtleties ot,sliding a knobbie around a turn or fiying over the jumps in good style, spend a morning riding a motocross sldehack. In a twinkling ot an eye you become a third-rank Novice again. The most experienced bike rider would be a beginner as soon as he got on a hack. Worse yet, much ot the experience gained in dirt r iding must be un-learned before you start to teel comfortable on a three wheeler. We had these facts driving home with no uncertainties this week when the Cycle News test stall got an invitation to help Kelvin Franks try out hJs shJn1ng new Triumph poWered side car rig. Kelvin is well known to SoCal motocross riders as being one ot the guiding lights ot the CMC which is just about the most active motocross club around. When we arrived at Kelvin's new Costa Mesa shop we gave the strang conveyance the once over. It's called a Wasp, it comes trom England in k1ttorm minus engine, wheels, shocks, controls etc. The Jumps never did feel qulle rlehl. Thai dldn'l keep II from belne fun.
