BAY MARE OPENS EAST·WE T SERIES . ~ t.:z ~ t.:z d ~ U By Dave Smead BAY MARE, CAL . Mar. 22,1970- Over the microphone promoter Dave Grove announced, "on the Une now are some of the best professional motocross riders in the United States." With Wilson and Desoto there he couldn't be wrong but the important thlng in his statement is the word "professional." He believe It. The course was det1n1te1y professional as was the organization. One winner was obvtous. Jim Wllson won 6 motos, 3 10 the 250 class and 3 10 the 500 class. In the second 250 moto he charged from dead last to first. In the 500 class he was 'pushed considerably by John Desoto. John laid his CZ down far enough to bend his shifter 10 the first moto, Of course he stlll took a second. In the last 500 race John crashed, leaving JIm uncontested• .It's been awhile since Kring and Aberg did their deed on us but I stlll thlnk Jim Wllsori is ready to contest them. If (change that to when) he wins his trtp to PepperW and becomes undisputed number 1 American he'll either go to the ISDT or the TrOPhe d'Nations. JIm Dawson won the 125 professional race. Gene Canady was there to lead the first race but he did a super number. He got up and charged on but his bike didn't run the same. He skipped the last moto,' For sure, he needs a perfectly running machine to stay ahead of Jim Dawson. The course at Bay Mare featured an extra loop for the Senior classes. It looked wtId - and It was. Just about all the Seniors had their chance to chew a little dirt on It. After the first hlll at the start the course went off to the right, up a steep bank, turning at the top and comlog down aga1n through a loose 90 degree left hand turn. . Besides the normal classes a lOOec class was featured. It had a lot of kids who were unwittingly discouraged: The course always seemed to get watered 10 front of them. Those that come back are going to be tough - watch out for the second generation of American motocross riders.
