Poteet,"Shirey, Morgan Take Class Wins 'In Desert" By Dick Wright - LUCERNE, CALIF . March 22,1970- 'JbI banner dropped at 10 a.m, Sunday, and nearly four hundred big bikes dashed for the smoke, at the Invader'S M.C . Hare Scrambles. Tom Poteet 00 a Bultaco, the eventual winner grabbed the early lead and Rick Shirey on a 360 Bultaco tucked into second a t the smoke bomb. Completing the first of two forty mile loops, Poteet came through the pits in less than an hours. Shlrey was second, followed by Bill Friant on a Husky. Poteet held his good lead even through an endo in the " hoop 'de doo' s". He managed to get going again just as Shirey came into slldlt. Poteet came in for the win, rerruir1dng "There were a lot of hidden rocks out there. Also, there were a lot of guys still in the Rocky Canyon that we had to get around in the second lOOP. It got hairy." Rick Shirey came in second, and Fred Reva was thlrd on a Bultacn, Ron Wilson, on a Husky, took flrst Amateur, and John McManus was first Novi ce in on a Husky. Gary Davies, a memberor the Desert Knights, took the 125cc class on his hot Yamaha, with Chris Murdock, a first year Yamaha rider, taking the 250Cc Novice class . Jack Morgan, the top 100Cc rider, took the lead right off the line in small bike competition and held it all the way for the win. Mitch Mayes was second and Jim Summer was thlrd. Paul Nyland was the first Novice in, and John Burton was second. John Preiss took flrst Amateur • All of these winning 100Cc riders were Hodaka mounted. Race officials were quick in their praise of the Rescue 3 group; there was a mts-hp two mUes after the start and the y wer e right there doing the thlng they do best.
