'~ A LDA NA ~ "" Col :c: Col d :... U PHOENIX, ARIZ., March 20, 1970~ook1e Expert Dave Aldana, 38x, and Evel Knievel seem to do their respective things quite well together. Last month at Sacramento Aldana scored a tire width victory over Dick Mann and Knievel survived a close 13 car, ramp to ramp jump. This time Aldana scored ahead of National #1, Mert Lawwill, by a considerably"wider margin and Evel had no obvious problem witl\ 13 cars. Lawwill chased the first year EJqlert tor the tull 15-laps around the Manzanita 1/2 mile and could only manage a last ditch spurt on the tinal go around to try and beat the BSA boy to the checkered. Mert, r1d1ng his old standby" Pelican" tried the BSA on the outside of the first turn but couldn't hold it on the tacky upper surface. Young Dave lacks some refinements but bas the ah1l1tyand ts very hard to get by when he is in the lead. Mel Lacher, 37, had his H-D on the pole by virtue of beating Aldana in the third heat where Aldana was having traction problems and he did some really great tank slappers in taking second. Lacher was third at the completion of lap 1, but Dave Smith, llx, motored on by followed quickly by Tom Rockwood. Both Smith and Rockwood bad spectacular !al1s with Tom going down first on lap 8 exiting the last corner. HIs bike bounced toward the 1n!ield and he went straight ahead. Before he stopped he was scrambling for the wall as the rest of the pack scattered toavoidmanandmach1ne. ANNEXES. MANZANITA Don (l1Y) Castro keeps his Triumph Just ahead of Mark (87) Brelsford riding the Harley·Davldson XR 750. The twosome finished In this order back In fourth and fifth place. Aldana got the win and Mert Lawwlll pulled In for second. The never·say-dle Gold Star of Shll'ty Seabourne was rlghllhere for third. Photos and Story by Bill Spencer Smith bad an engine seIzure just crossing the start/!1n1sh on lap 12 and slid out to the tence. Don Castro, lly and Mark Brelsford, 87, swapped fourth tor awhile wh11e Shorty Seabourne, 8, and his magical Gold Star bad third all sewed UP. Castro's Triumph was working extremely well as he led the second heat until Lawwill showed the packed house why he is Grand National Champ. Don was doing great with Mert just kicking at his rear wheel unW exiting the last turn when Mert put a wheel up close. On the next go round, the yellow, Donlooked back to see what Mert was up to but Mert had turned on the gas, blasted around on the outside with Shorty along tor company. Seabourne, as usual, was backing the Gold Star through the turns. In the Amateur 100lap Main, Randy Ellis, 17r, came out best over Freddy Edwards, 15 R, Edwards led it oft but Ellis caught him on the third lap and was long gone trom there. Wayne Hosalca, 55x, and Bob Belling, 902, traded third spot around tor awhile unW Hosaka bad enough and nosed out school teacher Bellina. Bob bad driven out from San Francisco with a tew students tor a field trip and brought his Triumph along just in case. Terry Dorsch, G5R, was relegated to flIth atter he and Al Kenyon, 88y, diced. Kenyon was having traction problems and then ba.1llng very hard when the primary chain gave up the cause. Gary Scott, IGly, won the Novice Main by a straightaway withaflawlessperfor- mance. HIs Bultaco never missed a beat unW the checkered tell and then it immed1ately seized, but atter all, the per- tect racing engine is supposed to do just that. Daytona winner Dick Mannralsedatew eyebrows by showing up on a new XR 750 Harley trom Hayward H-D and a new. patch on his leathers showing the name Hap Jones. HaP, an ex-racer himself, is now sponsoring Bugs. Quite a deal. Bugs will ride the H- D on the halt-miles and miles. His racing stable Is certainly .diverslIied enough. Both Rayborn and Brelsford rode the new. 750's. Both motors were stock and so there isn't much to say except that they need work. Cal said some trame work would also help. Just tor the record, Evel Knievel did clear all 13 cars and his performance was flawless. He appears to be more and more professional with each showing. He is a grand performer in the grandiose style. II he should be allowed to jump Dev1l's Canyon, then he w11l have performed the greatest stunt the world w11l know. (Results on page 31) .., Dave Aldana gets to pose with the pretty girl again. Dave held off a last lap charge by Mert Lawwlilto gain the checkers and the marbles. .
