Styl. and action like this won't keep these fellows Juniors lang• ~_ Malflt (face In the crowd) look an as the fir. went aut. His hack got just tao much fire. By Dave Smead Complete results weren't available at th1s writing due to the number of entries. The only th1ng that can be said conclusively is that John DeSoto on a 380cc CZ is one helluva smooth wUd man. Ha won the 500cc Senior bash just too easy. Next · week' we hope he and others 11ke Jim Wilson will come. The Bay Mare Race Course had been in existence for about a year. It's been a year of fantastic change, so that now Bay . Mare has become a tremendous asset to the sport of motocross. The latest improvements include two spectator overpasses (no more crossing the course, g:i.ng) and one underpass. Also, a road was cut along the canyon wall to provide access to the pits without having to cross the track also. Add a new improved course to th1s formula and you have a sure success. Promoter Dave Grove plans even more improvements to the course; perhaps another tunnel. In case you aren't up on the news, Bay Mare is the location selected for the start of the richest series yet to be held in the U ,S. Next Sunday, March 22, a five race series starts that w1ll send a six man team to Pepperell, Mass. to decide our East- West Champion. Included next week is $545 prize money for Seniors plus a new Yamaha 125 for the best Junior. The race Sunday was the first AMA race of the year put on by the Bay Mare Cycle Association. The race included sldehacks. Jim Mottltt, pilot and Clay Erickson, passenger put on an extra show for the corwd, It's called crash andburn with no crash. A gas Une broke, starting a fire on their mount with flames shooting 50 feet in the air. Oh well, one more four stroke put to restl Another th1ng that the BCA did right was to exclUde anyone from racing without a District 37 card. No more pie plate Experts. It's sate, sane and sensible. Vegas Hare Scram"'es falls To By Kibby W, Scales Photos by Sharon Morris LAS VEGAS, NEV. Feb. 22 - The beautiful rain we received all day Saturday may not have been appreciated by the race lay-out crew, as they watched their 11me ·disappear, but it was a blessing to the riders Sunday. With a few minor changes the race proceeded as part smoke run and part hare scrambles. At eleven o'clock 90 riders were ott and running for the two smoke bombs and a super bottle-neck in the form of culvert under a highway. As the faster riders piled into the dry washagtanttrattic jam developed. As the slower riders ~witzer arrived most of them proceeded to r ide over the highway to avoid the jam. '!be situation made for some odd looking results in the first loop as some of the slow riders on small machines were running well up in front for a brief time. In the first loop the lead changed hands numerous times between Max Switzer (Hus), Tom Scales (Hus) and B1ll Hill (Gre) . Scales was leading as they came through the pits. At the fuel stop Switzer was first out and went on to take first over-all with Scales second and Casey Folks, who apparently forgot he was riding a l25cc Sachs, took the th1rd over-all spot. There were a few morning showers but it cleared ott by race time. The club changed the course and it was pretty rough, as most new courses are. One of the best races of the day was . the 125" Am.-Ex. Class. In the first moto, Amateur Keener took the lead and held it to the ftnlsb Une, whlle Expert Ron Tobey was having his ups and downs. The next two motos were all Tobey'S, however, as he showed why he carries , the Number 1 Expert plate in his class. Keener seemed content with w1nning the Amateur Class. · . The 250 Novice Class was taken by Dennis Lyons on his Bultaco. Dennis acquired Tod Sloan's Ascot high-point bike and apparently has had not trouble ad justing to it. This is his second win in the short time he 's had it. motes, In the 650 Expert Class " Grandpa Huggy" (Carrol Jackson) took the win on his new Triumph. Rick E11ssarraras won the first moto and then alternated between being off the track and on his head the next two whlle Jackson ran away and hid . Aside from the roughness of the track it was an excellent day of racing and the ambulance wasn't used all day. ' More clubs llke th1s would put TTs back on the upswing.
