Dave Rodgers Leads -CMC Hallman Series By Bob Sanford ~ CARLSBAD, CALIF., March 15,1970- Dave Rodgers rode his Bultaco lnto so le possession of firs t place 10 the CMC's Hallman Series at Carlsbad Raceway Sunday, ending a tie that had existed :.. slnce the ser ie s Inception , five meetU ings ago. With one 'mor e meeting of the series to go, however, either Larry Pfutzenr etuer or Mike Drews - both only one point behi nd the leader - could conceivably end up with top Junior honors , w1nn1ng the l2 5cc Penton and a year's sponsorship, compliments of Torsten Hallman Racing, Inc . Rodgers won two of the l 25cc Jr., first division, motos, and ended up with class honors, as well as the maximum t.:J ~ t.:J tl six points toward the Hallman trophy. Drews, ridlng a CZ, also caputredapalr and landed 10 the top spot of first division, 250cc Jr. competition. Last wee k' s co-leader, Larry Pfutzenreuter, managed only third place 10 both the tzscc and 25Occ' Junior events. A broken chain at the start of the third moto pr even ted Greeves mounted Ji m Wilson fr om pull1ng his us ual s weep of the 250cc Expert class. WUs on won two motes, but Tom Rapp on a Bultaco flnished s econd 10 all three motes, giving him enough total points for a w1n 10 the class. And speaking of the third moto 10 the 250cc Expert class ••• With Wilson's chain out at the drop of the green flaIt. Marty Tripes on a CZ This Bullaeo rider gets down to It. The two riders battled practically'side by side for one and one-half laps. Coming Into a . sharp turn on the donwhill section, however, West lost control and went off the course. He was back on 10 a matter ot second, but the mis-cue had cost hi m dearly. In the meantime, Wilson had pushed his machine lnto the pits and installed a new chain. Comlng onto the track, he was about two and one-third laps behi nd the leader. The Greeves Expert was at his best, and within the lap, he had passed West and was mak1ng a gallant effort at Tripes. He caught the CZ rider with apparent ease, and went on to try to lap the entire field. But the two lap handicap was too much, and WUson had to settle for last 10 the six man event. Carlsbad has some carners that call for these mld·alr twos. Another ot Sunday's better races was the third moto ot the l25cc Jr., third division. More than 20 bikes came otf the Une and headed for the turn onto the track. After the dust had cleared, it was Bob LendI on a Yamaha 10 firs t place, with at least a half-dozen r iders hot on his trail. F or two laps LendI held the Nell Haney pack at bay, but Tom Mandelville slowly worked his way UP, and managed to come off a small jump as the leader. But success apparently spoiled Manderv1lle. He los t his Yamaha trylng to negotiate a turn, and the lead went right back to Lendl, But not for long. Comlng out ot nowhere, Bultaco mounted Jon Miller, the winner of one ot the previous motos, made his move. He took LendI on the uphill seetion and held on for the wave ot the checkered flag. ., Sunday's motocross was letter perfeet from a spectator's point ot view. Not only did summer get an early start, but the course was almost entirely visable from any one of a number ot vantage points, And if you ' got tired Of motorcycles, automobUe drags were being run a few hundred yards away. The Hallman Series comes to an end at Fontana Raceway next Sunday, March 22. After the series conclusion, from 20 to 25 CMC Juniors will be promoted to a newly created Intermediate class, according to club president, Stu Peters. The Intermediates will compete with the Experts, but will be scored separately, Peters said.
