March 1, 1970Mud, sweat and tears was an apt description of the condttlon of the course, riders and machines for the Lompoc Slo-Pokes motocross held Sunday, March 1. Rain drenched the newly made course for three days prior to the scheduled race but the advertisements read "Rain or shine" so the club Went on with the showl Show it was too, like something stra1ght out of Laugh-In, can you believe fantastic lap times of seven minutes on the 9/10 mile course? The 100 Juniors had six entries and two riders off the linel Mud caked on machines so badly . riders would fall and their bikes left upright! Fortunately no one took the SUZUKI PANORAMA VIEW GOGGLES competition too seriously and the riders seemed to enjoy the mud derby as much as the cold wet spectators. Bob Grossi from Santa Cruz put in his first appearance on this course and his riding ab1llty is a sight to behold. Our local boy, Steve Benedict is no slouch but Grossi really put it to him with his high flying style. You kept wondering U Bob dtdn't know there was 10 inches of mud he was sIogg1ng through. The non-competitive ' Trail Bike Sportsmen Association was formed for two basic purposes: (1) "Topromoteand encourage trail bike riding as a form of recreational activity which can be enjoyed by the entire family. In addttion to monthly meetings with interesting guest speakers, the Association also offers monthly outings which range from oneday rides to weekend campouts for the family or indtvlduals. (2) To protect the membership interest in the public domain through association with allled organizations and by ensuring that the interests of members are presented and upheld prior to the enactment of legislation which affects the use of the public domain. The Association is also concerned with the public acceptance of motorcycllng and demands from its members, a consideration for the rights of others who share in the use of the public domain and a strict adherence to the laws and regulations governing such applause from onlookers.
