Hililoppers Mud Scrambl.s Goes Dry i'" By Carole Weigant , SANDY, OREGON Feb. 22,1970- Due to lack of rain ' for two weeks, the HWtoppers M.C. Mud Scrambles turned Into a Moto X. BUt since the weather was fantast1c for riding the seventy-five compet1tors didn't mind. The track was dry and very, very fast. The-l00cc riders were first to make their bid for fame but It was Del Burgess all the way with three solid wins. In the 125 class Ron Waggoner on a Yamaha broke a ring In the first moto but after an upper end job between moto's he was able to make the points that counted to take a solid third place win. Feb. 22, 1970- It m~rllt.ng but by race t1me it was clearing UP and It turned out to bea warm afternoon for riders and spectators. ' . A field of 160 riders turned out to try for toP honors on the day's fast track. The riding was fast and furious as each rider tried to add points to hts cred1tfor the championship that Is coming UP at the end of nsxt J)')llt:" Three riders were hurt during the various main events. JIm Measure went down just off the llne In the 100cc C MaIn, and was taken to the hospital to have a badly bruised leg looked at. Len Wells went down on the inside of the right hand turn and left for the hospital with a shoulder Injury. was a cloudy In the Open class B MaIn MUJar Angel went down over the outside bank of the track and left, under hts own power, with a leg Injury. Gary Kapus went down In the 100cc Trophy Dash but was not Injured. He took the 200cc Dash and the 100cc A MaIn without to much trouble, but ran up against Buck Murphy en the 200cc A Main. Buck was In the lead and holding Gary off unt1l the last laP. Buck went a little high on a corner and Gary squeezed In under h1nl and won the 200cc A MaIn by a bike length. Another big winner of the day was Tom Watterson In the 250cc and 360cc classes. In the 250 class he took A-2 and In the 360 class he took the TrophY Dash and the A-I. Keep an eye on this boy, he should go far. (Results on page 19) Howard Wins far West Scrambles start; took over the lead a couple of laps later from another CZ rider, Dave Jackson, and went on to win the 250 A class. Jackson was 250 B winner. Jim Creech took second 250 B with a 'Steady pace, and •that Is near impossible on this course. Creech was followed by Ossamounted Shawn Chrlst1e who played catch-UP for hts third place. Roolde mud r ider, VlrgU Teague,a1dedby"AHELLUVA PIT CREW," managed to hang onto hts Bul PurSang long enough for it to bring him Into fourth and final trophY spot for the 250 B group. Local motorcycle dealer, Richard MUler, was the only reportable Injury of the day as he bumped the bar brace with hts mouth, hard, chipping a tooth and spl1tt1ng hts gums enough to require st1tches. Bill Law carne out of ret1rement on Don Wright's Penton to take first 125 A. After two hours on that course, he just might go back Into ret1rement. Paul Combs' new American Eagle brought hts second trophY In - as many ou!1ngs as he took first 125 B, Thts guy was flat maJdng 1t•••Yamaha-mounted Ralph Dyer was third. Jim Ryan and hts new Hodalca. " Supe r Rat" picked up their first compet1t1on trophY In fourth . The next event will be March 8 on the new course In McKlnleyV1l1e, provided by Mr. Maurice Letz, owner and operator of the Cock Pit Drive-in. We have already used this course and It Is a beaut. He gave Rick Burgett a good run for his money but had to settle for second. Rick also , won first In the 125 class. Not bad riding for only 13 years old. Art Seibert also rode In the 260 class but only under the condlt1on he forfeit any trophY position he won because of no class jumping. Technically Dick Jagow took a second, which doesn't happen very often. . In the Open class It was three wins for the unbeatable Ron Bro'YD, and a very close fight for second between Bob Weigant and Jack Baxter, who traded place back an d forth all day. In the 20 minute sweeper the 125's started first, then the 250 and the Open bikes. Dick Jagow and Art Seibert carne In orie-two, and there was long stroke rider Ron Brown who passed 30 two stroke bikes to take an unbelievable third.
