F eb . 22, 1970 - The Salinas Ramblers MC hel d Its second event of 1970 and It was quite a success. Almost 400 rtders signed up to r ide this most d1ff1cult of Winter scramble tracks. An estimated 1500 spectators came to Watch the action and there was plenty .to be seen. A l Kenyon paid extra money to ride two m otor s and made it pay for I tself bY winn1ng both the 250 EllPert and 500 Expert classes . Carl Cranke gave all a good race though as he was given a tie in the 500 and f1n1shed third in the 250. Betwee n the two, they really mak e It all worth while to watch. Kenyon rode both the CMC 1s proving that Northern Callfomia I s a motocross dream. Now ithas found another fabulous plot of land just 1 hour East of Sacramento on Hlghway 16. The 150 acres 1s in Playmouth across from the country fairgrounds. ThIs land has a hit of everything: l ots of sand, rolllng h111s, jumps, creeks, and mud. Atter havlng broken his knee cap, oucnt, at Marysville, young Lackey will m ount a l25cc Sachs and race moto- cross and hare/hound. Lackey made his mark in Northern Calltornla this past year with very dectstve wins at China Camp motocrosses. He spent 14 months 10 the novice, amateur categortes and was jus t recently made an EllPert. This in itself Is quite an accomplishment and with a few more years of experience, ' hopefully Lackey can make the international scene. He has already proven himself to be an accomplished 125 Senior rider in the lnterAms and with help coming f r om' Jim Johnson 'S Campus Suzuki, Brad should be fantastic to watch. He wUl ride all the CMC North motocrosses to start with and as other series develop so wUl he. When not astrIde his Sachs, he can be found at the class 'C' events checldngon 1lattrack ' raclng. Although he doesn 't ride this style he said that when he reached the proper age he would def1n1tely try it. He looked quIte good In the 650 main astrIde his TrIumph and in time should return to his own great style. Bill Landsborough led off the main but could only last a lap as Bruce motored on by. Brother Lance Anderson took over in the second lap when Bruce went over the handlebars with a front end problem and took the checkered easUy. The course was 28 mUes long and consisted of everything; some of the trails were not even as wide as the btkes handlebars, others were loggIng skid roads where only a bulldozer had been. There wer e mud and water holes 2 to 3 feet deep and f r ozen snow on the shady corners. There were logs to ju mp, trIcky downh1lls which wer e almost impos sibl e to stop on, and a granite road which allowed the rider go go as fas t as he dared to go. The start was a LeMans start. This Is where the rIder parks his btke and then walks to a line some 50 to 100 f eet away and then they mus t run to th e bike start it and pr oceed on down the course. 66 brave souls started out the r ace and only 39 f1I)Ished. To m Street f r om Klamath F alls on a 250cc Suzuki was f lrst overall. The course was set up and marked with white tissue paper and no one wandered too far otf course. Gordon Mooney was responsible f or the well marked and dev eloPed course. The next event f or the MRA Is a Poker Run at the new, st11l under construction Sourdough Gulch Motor cy cl e Park on March 22, 1970. Some MRA m ember s put 10 several Sundays of thelr own time to get the new park ready f or r iding. The purpose of the park is to get an area where the whol e famUy can go and enjoy this fas t growing sport. The park 1s a members only area due to Insurance for accident, however memberships are not too hard to get. A single membership Is $12.00 and a famIly membership Is only $15.00 per year.
