The hero of the day was a competitor who ride his stock AT-1 Yamaha to the final. dr ipping moment. He would stop and chat with fans and race officials almost every iaP. He was one of three bikes running at the finish of the third heat. In the Open class Gunnar Lindstrom was able to lap every rider at least twice without even riding hard In the eight lap heats. While everyone was falling and wallering In the goop, Lindstrom rode through It all, almost effortlessly. Heavy rains dur ing the early morning kept both riders -and spectators at a minimum. The sh ort but demanding course was that " s ea of mud" that everybody talks about. Many riders, upon seeing the track, left their bikes on the trailer. and joined the thin ranks of the spectators. Because of the s mall turnoutof riders, only 2 classes were run. The four Open class bikes were combined ' with the 250's. P rize money was paid to the firs t four places In the large bike field and to the first three In the small (Q-125cc) class. . The captain of the American Motocros s Team, Russ Darnell, left for anoth er season of European motocross compe tition this week. Russ and perhaps some other American r iders will carry the stars and stripes Into Inter national competition on courses through out Europe.
