eMe THREE WA Y lIE NAR.ROWS -T TWO O Three Juniors lake one oIlhe banked lurns al Fontana. By Bob Sanford Photos by Doug Parker FONTANA, CALIF. Feb. 22, 1970-HaIIman Trophy - competition narrowed slightly at Fontana Raceway Sunday, as Mike Drews was edged out of last week's three way tie, leaving only Larry Pfutzenreuter and Dave Rodgers tied for top honors In C.M.C.'s latest motocross series. But the race if far from over. Two of the six events still remaln to be run, and a good showing by any number of other competitors - not to mention a poor showing by either of the two current leaders - could drasticallY affect the standings. Pfutzenreuter, the young Bultaco rider from Garden Grove, turned In outstanding 100cc and 250Cc performances Sunday, winning five of his six motos, and picking UP the maximum six points toward the Hallman crown. Rodgers, ridIng only In the 125cc class, wonall three of his motos, and also grabbed the maximum six trophy points (C.M.C. awards six Hallman potnts to the winner of each division, for each class of competition. However, a rider, no matter how many classes he enteres, Is only awarded points from his best class showing of the day. Thus, six points Is the maximum). Probably the best race of the day came 10 the f1na1 moto of the 500cc Expert competition. Seem!rigly unbeatable Greeves mounted Jim Wilson, along with Bill Silverthorn on a CZ, were literallY neck and neck through six laps of a seven lap event. Wilson would put a wheel ahead, then Silverthorn would do the same. The crowd, of course, knew that Wilson would eventually ' pull It out. But somebody apparently forgot to tell Bill Silverthorn. About half-way through the last lap, theCZriderfrom Lemon Grove suddenly came over a jump with a two to three yard advantage. And that was all he needed. Although Wilson tried gallantly to wrestle back the lead, Silverthorn held on for the wave of the checkered fla.e:. With an apparent minimum amount of effort, Sunday's event was run smoother than you have the right to expect. Stu Peters and Kelvin Franks are past masters at this sort of thing, and with the ald of the weatherman, presented a FirstClass motocross, much to the liking of the 56 entrants, and an equal number of spectators. ". . Another highlight of the Fontana endeavor, was the first U.S. appearance of the new Mexican motorcycle, the Carabella. Designed primarily for road racing, the 250cc machine was outfitted with knobby tired and flown In from Mexico City. The bike, along with .Its factory rider, will be around for a few ' more weeks, competing In various C.M.C. events. The next event In the Hallman series ' will be held on March 15 at Carlsbad, with the final running scheduled back at Fontana on March 22. Junior winner of the series will receive a new 125cc ' Penton, as well as a year's sponsorship from Torsten Hallman Racing In "San . Diego. Both Juniors and Experts will be eligible for the next nine prizes, sets of racing gear, also compliments of Torsten Hallman. PIT RACER OF THE WEEK By Ron Szilagyi First subject of what we hope will be a short lived feature of CYCLE NEWS Is Pit racer of the week M. Casper, rider of Mateo number 757 at the Sled Rider'S motocross at Huntington Beach Cycle Park. Casper received repeated warnings about popping wheelies on an access road behind the pits at HBCP. He asked permission to ride into the spectator side of the course just before his race came UP. Casper was granted permission but was warned about the 5 mile_per hour speed limit that was to be enforced there. Once inside the spectator area Casper disregarded the safety rules and used excessive speed narrowly missing a three year old child. Casper put his speed to use out on the course but some how two fellows beat him that weren't so keyed-up that they had to go full throttle everywhere they went 10 the pits. Huntington Beach Cycle Park owner Don England says that Casper won't ride at HBCP again and he Is our choice for Pit Racer of the Week.
