COWPALACE Feb. 20, 1970 - Well race fans, he did It again, that's right, young Mark Brels- for astride his H-D won his ninth Short Track and extended his point total to 93. The Speedster led the 15 laps all the way again, and was never In trouble even though he was experiencing clutch problems earlier In the heats. Mark won his semi with a fast time, to grab the pole position. Rap id Ralph Wladman fought off an onslaught by Jim Rice to take second place as the two put on a show of their own. Butch Corder f1n1sbed fourth with Russ Powell close behind. Wheeler Gresham won the 10-lap consolation event after dumping Jim Rodaer In the last turn on the last lap. Rodaer must not have been ready for the Inside pass as Wheeler got almost a whole bike under the Yamaha and was by with Jim dodging hay bales. Gresham led off but was passed by Rodaer easUy enough, only to lose the lead himself, just as easily. 'lb1s week is the final at the Cow Palace and It should be a regular barn burner. After the main event Is run a special 15-lap feature w1ll be run with the winner going home with $500 extra. Not bad for a little short track. Someone has fi nal ly formed a Na ti onal Sanctioning Organization for motorcycle Drag Rac Ing, The Mid-Atlantic Motor cyele Assn., long famous for Its fantastic drag meets at the Atco Dragway In New Jersey has broadened Its horfzons, and hopefully, those of the entire sport. M.A.M.A. has become the American Motorcycle Drag Racing Association, and will be functionIng on a nation-wide basis. Former Director of MAMA, Roy Stawn, Is In charge of AMDRA and Is more than qual1f1ed to head the- new organization. A new set of rules and classes have been drafted and are available In booklet form. The 1969 MAMA rules were the format for this book and have the competitor In mind, the presence of more than 60 classes proves this. Also In mind are the track operators when AMDRA says It takes at least two bikes to make a class run-off. Three major tracks have already signed with AMDRA and more are expected to follow soon. The 1970 s eason for- all bike meets looks like this so far; AprU 5. June 14, August 30, and October 18 at the Southland Dragway In Houma, La.: June 14 being the Southern Nationals. AprU 26, July 19, and October 11 at CecU Co. Dragway In Bayview, Md., with July 19 as the East Coast Nationals. AprU 12, May 10 & 31, J une 21, July 12, August 9 & 31, September 13, and the AMDRA National Championships on October 25 at Atco Dragway In Atco, N.J. This schedule will grow as more tracks come Into the AMDRA fold . The 1970 Berkshire Trial w1ll score a first for cross country events In the U.S.A. by using computer facWtles In Cambridge, Mass., via a telephone link from the Middlefield, Mass ., headquarters, for computation of the scores. Dr. DaVid Latham of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Laboratory In Cambridge, Mass., Is supplying the computer scoring program and facUlties . Latham w1ll also be one of the leading contenders for a Gold Medal.
