Feb. 15, 1970- In what was pr obably one at the best days tor desert racing In a long dry winter the Victors and Sinners M.C.s teamed up to throw a dual European scrambles In the HoUday area. Recent rain held the sand together and 75 degree weather made you teel like going tast. Both courses were about six mlles around and required about 12 minutes per tour. Cutting that eliLpSed time figure to as Uttle as possible Tom Poteet took a double win In the 250 Expert class with his hot Bullaco. Another two-timer was Jack Mor gan whotook 100 Experthonors. The tlrs t race or the day on the Victor's course was the loocc Amateur/Expert chase. All the young tigers had a good go at Morgan but he was able to fight ott a strong bid tr am Ter r y Clark. As they came In tor the tlag they were separated by only two teet apart tor a photo finish . Tom Brooks was third. Jim Warner was tlrst Amateur on a Sachs. I The next race we caught on the course was the combined 500 Open Am./Ex. go. J.N . Roberts got the lead but Rich Thorwaldson on a Bullaco was pushing him pretty good. On the last lap, J. N. had trouble on the downhill section comIng Into the plts and Rich took the lead and came In tor the win. Whitey Martino was second on a Husky and J.N. coasted In tor third . The 250Cc race on the Victor's course was a tast attalr. Tom Poteet on the Bullaco got the lead and held It all the way to take his tlrst win or the day. Bill Friant was second on his Husky. Terry Clark had an hour's rest alter his lOOcc ride and rode his 250Cc Yamaha to a saUd third spot. The first race or the day on the Sinner's course was the 250Cc Am./Ex. race. Poteet took this race too, making It a good day tor him, Bruce Dunford was second tollowed by Phil Bowers. Roy KnIght was tlrst Amateur on his Dick Alle n tuned Yamaha. Derek Rickman came aul lor airy al lhe deserl. In the sandwash and ther e were a lot or rocks, but the ti re r oad was a blast." There was a good battle tor three laps In the 100Cc class on the Sinner's course between Jack Morgan on the Hodaka and Jet! Wright on the Rickman. Wright got a flat tire on the tourth lap and Morgan cam e In tor the win with a big lead. Jim Warner took second and tlrst Amateur on his Sachs . . The Am/Ex. 500 and Open class on this course had as an added starter Derek Rickman, EngUsh motocross star and trame bullder. Derek r ode one or his own Rickman creations as did J.N. Roberts. The early leader was Rich Thorwaldson but J.N. took over on the third lap only to drop two laps later. The win went to this year's number one rider In this class, Whitey Martino. Bruce Dunford was second also on a Husky and Thorwaldson was third. Derek Rickman was tourth and he seemed to enjoy the race. George Walker took tUth right behind Derek. The Novices were out In strength and the 250Cc races must have had around 200 starters. The results at those races w1ll be torthcomlng as soon as the scorers dig themselves out or the mountain at lap sheets. (Results on page 19) Nat .
