Johnson, Priddy, Wilson _ _ LeadTexas MX Point Races By John Blanton FT . WORTH, TE XAS, Feb. l , 1970- With fUteen points ea ch, r iders Mike Johnson (Sachs), Wyman Priddy (Malco) and Kenneth WUs on (CZ) now lead the curr ent Texas motocros s championship s er ies after pos ting wins In the l25cc, 250Cc and Open classes, respectively, in the opening event at Motorspor t Park at Fort Worth. Second, third and four th in the l25 cc Senior class wer e John Loughlin (American Eagle), Ernie Russell (American Eagle) and Per ry Lor enz (Penton). Following Wyman Pr iddy In the 250Cc class were Bill Kasson (CZ), David Dismukes (CZ) and F. D. Brewer ( Yamaha) . open class runners up were Floyd Hungerford (Husqvarna), Gayle Bradley (CZ) and David Hickman (Bultaco). First place winners received fUteen points, with twelve points going to second place, ten to third, followed by nine, ei ght, etc., for the top ten fini sher s. There will be eleven mor e events in the s er ies, and a rider's ten best finishes will be counted toward the championship. Champions hip winners in each class will be sent (expens e paid) to Saddleback Park, CalUornia to compete in the lnterAm serie s later this year. . Although It is too early to for ecast champions hip winners in the l25cc class, in the 250cc class Wyman Priddy has been a consistent winner, but Bill Kasson will keep Wyman fr om loafi ng. Kenneth Wils on will be very hard to beat In the Open class . Gayle Bradley Is competition for Ken, but the other strong contenders, Ra mon Dasch , PatRogers and Joe Rach el have yet to make a bid. The competition stands to gr ow more Inte ns e as the season progresses. (Results on page 18) By Maureen Lee . We got a kick out of one of the letters in "Voices" this past week from a gentleman who took great exception to the fact that Saddleback Park made him wear a helmet when he wanted to go In to play. He felt It was against his personal rights and that to make him wear one showed Park people dldn't have any Faith (obviously meaning the religious kind). Well, that last statement Is obviously a little too deep to go into but we know lots of riders who have Faith, ( me included eve n U at times I don't tolerate things with what is known as the 'Chrtstian attitude as the vicar used to say) who still believe in safety equipment, and wear It. So O.K. I resent the Gl vernment te1l1ng me I have to wear It but when you are on private property such as Saddleback, they can make It mandatory to have you wear anything they feel will add to safety. The AMA does too. Crashes can be fr equent when people are running around allover the place and just ask a doctor how small a bump It Is the s kull have to take before damage Is done. Make sure he's a fr iendlY one, most of the m HATE motor cycles because they 've seen too much damage done to riders that a little slmple safety equipme nt could have prevented. ram aroun D Funny thing Is, you rarely see the big names even warm UP a bike without that helmet going on. One time we watched Chuck Minert just puttering around the Perris gravel pit at about three mUes an hour but his helmet was on. There is more than one rider whose riding career was ruined due to just playing around without a helmet. A skid lid would have saved them. To people like that above mentioned chap we admit that you have your r ights just as we have ours and U you want to r ide sans helmet, scat out to a place like Holiday where you can ride all you want with no one telling you what you can or ca nnot wear. People who own tracks etc. have enough troubles with insurance and possible lawsuits to risk letting you out without equipment. -' To be really serious for a bit this is a problem that affects all clubs, scrambles and desert so we' ll make up one of our little tales to Illustrate what we mean and see U It doesn't make some of your hair curl. CalUor nia laws are dUferent than other parts of the country. Did you know you cannot s ign away your liabUity here? That someone Is always liable for you? So, we'll say this is Dis trict 1425 in CalUor nia and you drive a ways to ride a scramble in Moose jaw County put on by the Jolly Rogers M.C. Crlkey , U you blow It and fallon your noggin In a turn and the flagman was so drunk or stoned he couldn't even signal the rest of the pack or help get your bike off the track. Here come the r es t of the gang and r un over you or some other horrid thing happens. O.K. You could sue the club for negligence regardless of signIng that entry for m and you can also have a go at the land owner too, not to menti on the group who sanctioned the race in the first placel Incorporation won't save the Jolly Rogers either. With a sharp lawyer It's barely worth the paper It's on. The whole club is liable, losing you each personally so me bread. Now mos t of us realiZe that no one for ced us on that track in the firs t place and take our lumps with a smUe (would you believe a snivel?) but legitimate complaints can end up in court. If you broke your something-or-other sometime ago and are now thinking "Aha" after r eadi ng this, forge t It. It's not as easy as that but the problem is serious enough that some Districts are considering insurance against this sort of thing where everyone would be covered, a type of blanket poli cy for the whole season. •Nutf said for that sub ject but doesn't It make you wish for the old days when there weren't so many laws and damn rule books ? Perris is taking a turn for the better again this season•.The Burtons are trying to separate the racers and spectators a bit better with separate parking for each faction and the starting line in front of the tower, to give more room for vehicles. We loved seeing Huntington Beach list the Junior and Senior pit racers in their results for their none-District motocross. The next time someone cuts up in front of a CYCLE NEWS photographer the whole world will see the culprit in living black and white. . ·-----------· r Op.n class lead.r In the T.xas motocross points standings, K.nn.th Wilson shows us how h. - round.d up all those points.
