'Mn On Honda At Daytona an Dick (Bugs) Mann confirmed in Houston over the weekend the story tha t he would be riding one 'of the American Honda sponsored 4 cylind er Hondas to be r aced high on the Daytona banks this March. Mann is generally considered to be one of America's most ver satile riders and he carries his National Number 2 in to al most every facet of the professional realm of the sport. Dick split with BSA after last year and was seen riding a Husqvarna at Houston , Honda's r acing chief Bob Hansen will head the pits for the Daytona effort. Another racing authority, H-D's com petition chief Dick O'Brien expects that 160 mph will be needed to qualify on the pole . At thes e speeds, he says, tires are the big problem . Goodyear has a new improved front tire ready and is working on a mold , for a rear tire now. 0' Br ien says, • We'll probably see them for the first time when we arrive at Daytona." This bill is a standards bill only. It is not and does not intend to become a manda tory helmet-we aring bill. AB 142 would authorize the CHP to se t reasonable standards for safety in helmets and require that all heimets meet those standar ds in or der to be sold in California. This is all it is . It is not a half way s tep to mandatory helmets. Mr. For an believes in helmets . He Is concerned with human life and saf ety. He wishes we ali wore hel mets. But he is willi ng to accept the fact that we want to make up our own minds about the matter . His concern now Is with the SUbs tandard helmets which are available in many places. Too many cyclists, es pecially the young who wear helm ets beca use their parents insist, a hel met is a helm et and many are trusting headgear which won't withstand even a small shock . Mr . Foran has no plans to further intorudce mandator y hel met bills. There is s till the Na tional Highway Safety Act and Its money-cutting provisions. They have not yet been applied in the helmet • issue but as long as that law is on the books In Washington we have a potential hassle . The helmet la ws have not wor ked too well In any s tate. In some they have been r epealed, in so me declared unconstitutional. In California they were succe ssfully prevented from passage. It is time now to try to eliminate the requirements at the Feder al level. Ther e Is no need He'.e, 8ill Jan . 18, 1970 Las Vegas , Nev ada Ground Sha kers Cro ss Co unt y 125 Amateu r now to protect helmets to Assemblyman Foran .
