West picked up only 40 points for his ninth place fintsh in the fir st moto, but in the second molo he again came from behind to overtake the leader, Montesa mounted Tim Hart. This time West was not 10 be denied victory, and he picked up the 400 points for the win. The final leg of the 250cc class was West and AJS all the way. Tom Rapp only needed a fourth place finish to take the win, but he fell and Barry Higgins who was breathing down his neck at the time could not avoid him and made a path across Tom'S back. This put Tom out of the race but he still had enough points to finish thtrd behind second place Tim Hart. The first leg of the 500cc Expert event went to Montesa's Tim Hart with a wire to wire win. His closest competitor was Pat De Benedetti on an American Eagle, but he lost it in the woop-de-dos, and Rus s Darnell who had just passed Mar k Blac kwell and moved . into third, advanced to s econd but he could not catch Hart. Barr y Higgins had a fourth place s ta rt but his machine went s our in the third lap and retired him from the 500cc class. The second leg was again Tim Hart all the way, and once again Russ Darnell had to move his Husky from back in the pack to overtake and pass Blackwell for second. The final leg was quite different from the first two. Mark Blackwell powered his CZ into the lead with De Benedetti close behind. The two led the pack the en tire race and on the last lap DeBenedetti passed Blackwell to take the lead. Bla ckwell regained the lead for a moment only to lose it again as DeBenedettl passed him only a few feetfr om the finish . Hart only managed a fUth but his two wins gave him enough points for the win. Darnell was second, and Blackwell third. D. Rogers, R. Morrison, D. Divine, M. Drews and L. Pfutzenreuter all won a pair of Torsten Hallman motocross boots for their wins in the 125cc and 250ce Junior classes, and at the next CMC event at Perris junior riders will receive jackets for their wins. Feb. 8,1970- Although there were six motocross events in southern California this past Sunday, the CMC still managed to draw 260 riders to their Saddleback event, and it was not one of the Hallman Trophy series. The first event of the day was a team race between Mitco Bultaco, Orange County Motorcycles, the Sagebrushers MoC. and the Scramblers M.C. There were 33 riders in the event and the wlnner scored 33 points and last place 1 point. The total number of points determined the "inning team, and it was Mitco Bultaco first and the Sagebrushers second. Mitco's number one rider, Tom Rapp, picked up the 33 big points with his first place win and the rest of the Mitco riders tallied up the rest of the points for the win. When the flag fell on the firs t 250cc Expert moto, Tom Rapp flew into the lead, foll owed by Tim Hart, Jim West and the pride of New York, Barry Hlggins. Jim West and his AJS exploded into llfe as though the vigilantes were on his heels, and he overtook Hart and then Rapp to gain the lead.
