Oregon Opener By Jerry ShIpman Nell MacDannald and his potent M oto Beta aren' much bigger than the trophy they won on the District 35 scrambles track. The Year Of The 100's The 1969 Scrambling season might be called the year of the 100's. The 100Cc class has become one of the most improved and popular classes. This year's . 100's seem to go like the 250's used too. Many of the ,pike s that used to win consistently have been retired because they can hardly make the Main in this year's competition. ThIs new breed of 100's . seems to be the special province of the younger riders, who dominate the class . One of Northern Cali!ornia's young 100cc Scrambles riders is Nell Mac Dannald of District 35, who on his 15th birthday found himself in the middle of the 100Cc Scrambles point race. Therea1 surprise came for Nell when the November issue of American Motorcycling listed him as not only the District 35 high point 100Cc Scrambles rider, but also high point rider in the Western Division and second In the National Standings. Nell MacDannald is a good example for anyone interested In riding the 100Cc Scrambles. Nell's 115 lbs. is an easy load for his M. B and he Intends to continue in the 100cc class as an Expert, although there are not always enough Experts at every race to make a good class . It seems that too many riders transfer to larger bikes when they turn Expert so they can try their skill against the older a nd better known Exp~ts. McMINNVILLE, ORE., Feb. 1, 1970McMinnville Motocross Park opened its gates today for the first time and what a time. It is truly one of the most demanding courses this side of the Rockies. Many riders described the course as a "Personal hell" and then packed up and left after practice. Many of the l25cc riders that stayed couldn't even begin to ride the c ours e. The scratch goes up a 35 degree hill, followed by a series of off-camber hairpins, turns, sweepers and god-a wfu1 bike eating mud bogs. Just to stay aboard and f1n1sh was credit to the riders ab1l1ties. The l25cc Junior race had three 10 min. heats, the Seniors had three 15 • min. heats and the 250 and Open had several ten minute heats. The best racing of the day came from the Open class with Bob Leach of Salem and Bill Book of Cerritos both getting a first and second after two heats . Dan Smith on a CZ swooped everyone in the Senior 250 race. Dan is sponsored by Yamaha East, but chose a CZ and took three straight wins. A fine rider from Salem, Gary Oison riding a Penton had quite a battle with George McH1Uy on a Yamaha in the 125 Senior class. Gary won only .by a tie breaker first place; The 360 Junior class fell to Stu Osborne riding a 400 Malco. Stu has ridden almost every kind of bike . In the com petition at McMinnville he chose a Malco and it proved a winner in its handling and power under the most adverse conditions. Sudden Sam Sears S.F. Short Track By Bill Spencer SAN FRANCISCO, COW PALACE, Feb. 7, 1970 - Sam Maggl1n debuted his Bultaco, as the young San Jose State College student won his first professional Main Event. Maggie as he is sometimes known, led the 15 laps from start to finish. Second went to Stan Anderson who had his hands full staying in front of Bruce' Teixeira. Teixeira tangled with Bob Scally on the start and had to work very hard for the third. Jim Foley ran away with the Consolation event as a great number of new Novices were on hand trying their luck while the heroes were In Houston trying for the big buck. In the three lap Trophy Dash, Bob Scally proved to be the better rider as he led Teixeira to the checkered flag. In the Heat races ,Teixer ia, set the faSt time of the night in heat one with Dececco chasing him until Chal tried to pass and fell. Newcomer Barry Brown finished second In front of Paul Johnson.
