" ACA's PAYSE, BAST, MAYNARD SOAR ' AT HUNTINGTON BEACH ~ Story by Maureen Lee ~ HUNTINGTON BEACH, CAUF. Feb. 8, 1970 - The ACA ran another successful motocross Sunday. The turn-out wasn't too large and everyone got three motos which is plenty of riding for anyone's money I Some of the riders looked bushed by the end of the third round. The course isn't too demanding, there are some excellent jumps whicb really sent some of the boys soaring, but to qualify it as a motocross circutt I guess depends on what one' s definition of motocross is. Three riders turned in excellent performances. They were Mike Payse (American Eagle) in the 125 Junior, Mike ~Bast (Ossa) 250 Senior and John Maynard in the 500 aboard a Rickman fitted out with the BSAWeslake head. Maynard, who is the recent father of twin girls, did an outstanding Job but the win wasn't handed to him even though he won all three rounds. Doug Field on a very fast Yamaha gave him some trouble before being dlsquailled for a couple of infractions. John Seibert (Griffon) was right in there in spite of a tangle with Field in the second round but with what was probably a second place wrapped up the Griff's counter-shaft sprocket did something nasty, putting John L. out of of the third round, and out for the day. Jack Mahan (Husky) took the second behind Maynard who also managed to do a classic over-the-handlebars flip but still finished in the lead. Prospector Don Shore (C- Z) stocking cap and all came in third while the Sportsman winner was Lee Haase (Mateo), Mike Payse won all three of the 125 class, followed in by a pair of Bul-s ridden by Jesse Slaton and Louie Dunn. All these riders sported Jumpers from Champion Motorcycles in Costa Mesa and they are so spectacular we'd like to see all American riders wear them in all kinds of International competition. They are out of sightJ Bill Blakeslee on one of the new Dalesman Puch's was the Senior winner . Ossa was the marque jo beat in the 250 Senior but none - could. The first three places went to the Barcelona Bullets with Mike Bast winning three straight, Don Shore second and Danny HocJde third. HocJde almost didn't make it when part of his handiebar mounting broke in the last round but he wisely pulled off the track waiting for the end so he could still take the checkered flag and get scored for the full day. Jeff Cruzon (Bultaco) was the bad luck guy in the 100 Sportsman. He had an excellent lead in the first moto and looked like the man to beat but his baek wheel went bad and although he tried to make a go of it was forced way back. He came back to lead the second round but over-all points at the end of the day placed him quite a way back. Another Bultaco rider Danny Slaton had troubles and had to pull out for a whUe but he came back like gangbusters. The race concluded with a Hodaka first and second ridden by Danny La Porte and Frank Hantrup, The day ended reasonably early with all results finished so the riders knew where they stood.
