Feb. 8, 1970ACA road racing returned to Willow Springs Sunday with a whopping 136 entries and again proved that everyone can have a good time regardless of his ability or choice of mount. ' Bigs winners of the day were Steve McLaughlin, Don Emde, Tony Murphy and John McGill1vray in the 250, 500 and Open Senior GP classes. Jerry Green won the Open Production class. After two disappointing season, Steve McLaughlin Is busy making 1970 his year. Ftrst he stole the 250 heat race win coming oU the sweeper in the last lap with an awesome display of Yamaha horsepower. Then he won the Main Event by 11 seconds over Mike Lane and was running third in the 250 race before retiring in lap four with mechanical problems. Lane chased McLaughlin throughout the 250 Final, turning the fastest lap of the day in the process, a 143.5. Don Emde, up from San Diego with a pair of Yamahas, took third. Yamahas dominated the class, taking the first 11 places; these are the same production road racers available to the public from any Yamaha dealer. , A 350 version of the same machine won the 350 SeniorGP with Emdeaboard. Pat Hynn pressed Emde all the way as did Tony Murphy in the early laps before his carburetors got too rich. Hardest fought race of the day was the combined 500-0pen Senior GP when Tony Murphy on a 500 Manx Norton held off repeated drives from John McGill1vray on the larger Norton twin. The Manx was equal to the twin In everything but acceleration out of the slow turns; it was there McGill1vray gained the few feet every lap which made the race a real struggle. The Heavyweight Production class Is a brand watchers delight as BSA 3's scrap with Noeto n Commando's and Triumph Tridents. Roland Pagan ran away with the heat race on the Bill Robertson Trident but was out gunned I n the final by Jerry Green's Norton. The real racing was for second between Pagan and , Hurley Wllvert on a Honda Four. Both riders seemed equal until the straight when pure horsepower took over. There Pagan could pull the Honda if he was leading, and if Wilver led, he swerved back and forth at 100 mph to prevent Pagan's passing. The Triumph f1nally eased by on the back stretch to lake second, a good 50 yards behind the winning Norton. Howard Lynggard won the 250 Production race on a Suzuki and Raymond DeLong the 350 Production on a Kawasaki. , (Results on page 19) CZ's.Z50 a,.d 360 ee. Also 500ee. ,ESO D~ B.O.I: Valerian's.
