Feb. 1- It's still headline news when a 4-stroke type motorcycle beats the lusty, howling 2strokes at their own game, motocross. But that's what happened at the Stockton M .C .'s torturous, muddybasharound Helvetia Park. A novice named Jay Debeaubien, riding an elderly BSA single, thump ed to a surprise win In the open class. Spies Inform us that Mr. Debeaubien is only technically a novice, having been a professional racer of some renown several years back. But hard-track experience or no, when It comes to motocross i n Nor ther n California, almost everybody is a novice. Miller built about a half-a-lap lead over everybody else and didn't seem to mind the ditches, bumps and mud a bit. A heavy duty turnout of all classes except Experts made for a long day's show and heats were cut to 3 laps, which felt like 20 to most of the guys holding the handlebars. None of the famous 650size Triumphs that used to dominate the Northern Cal. AMA scrambles scene showed UP to do battle. But perhaps they will be encouraged by one 4-stroke's performance to give It a try next time.
