The past is Gary NIxon, Baltimore, Bli Smith, head honcho of the newly ~ authorized Calltornia Motosport Club ~ (Northern Division) announ ces that he has r.;j secured a new motocross course near "J Freedom, Cal. aU Monter ey Bay. U Nam ed " Apple Tree Motocr os s Track," it is located 7 mUes north of Freedom on Green Valley Road, in an apple orchard. Smith says that the smell of apples pervades the course. The tlrst CMC motocross on the new track wUl be March 1, tor the second in a six-race series" that will award a new CZ motocross bike to the points leader . February 8 will see a pre-serIes prac- - Lawwill finished second to Nixon in the first Astrodome short track race. He dropped to sixth last year and NIxon talled to qualitY tor the tinal event. The new champion Is rated as one of the best overall rIders in America and rides all types of events, including the road races at Daytona Speedway. Lawwill 's tour national wins in ' 68 were more than any other individual rider recorded. He has twice won national Steeplechase events but never a short track national. Nixon has won the national short track titled races no less than tour times but has yet to win a national Steeplechase race. The two top contenders are rated equal when it comes to racing the longer hau mUe and mUe dirt ovals that tind riders running well over the 100 mph mark. The crew spent Saturday night beside their bogged down bikes while tryIng to negotiate what would have been the second section of the course. Some of the hills were posted " TOO STEEP FOR JE EPS. " For once, they were too slick tor bikes, too. Four hundred hardy enduro riders signed up to ride only the first 55 mUes of the Iron Horse. It was mostly over roads. The run ended at Fouts Boys Ranch, which hadn't seen so much excitement all year.
