Photos & Story by DIck Wright First finisher In the US class was Eric Jen· sen on a Sachs. Open winner Doyle Fleldslln lshlld 13th over· all on a Triumph. MOJAVE, CAL., Jan. 25 - J.N. Roberts doesn't bring his Husky to the desert very often now that he is a big movie star, but when he does, he is the man to beat. Roberts has the master's toucb, and he showed his class again by winning the rough Four Aces 90 mile Hare & Hound in two hours. His impression of the race: .. It was beautiful, all kinds of wUd stuff, narrow canyons, big boulders behind the bushes, rocky down h11ls you name it they had it. It was an old time rider'S course." The banner dropped at 10:00 O'clock on the nose. Trails to the smoke bomb were rough from all the ditches washed out in' the last rain. It was booked as a rough one and it was. After an hour the leader came through the pits and it was Roberts. Next was Husky mounted Bruce Dunford who has really caught fire this month. Phil Bowers was third on a Yamaha. Several riders 'pull ed in with flat tires. And in came Al Baker with a collapsed rear end after doing an endo, The second loop was just as hard and filled with lots of narrow rocky trails. Roberts pulled in on his Husky to take the win followed a minute later by PhU Bowers taking first 250 on the Yamaha. Bruce Dunford got a flat tire 20 miles out but held on to third spot for a guttsy ride indeed. Whitey Martino, #1, was fourth on a 500 Husky followed by Tom Poteet on a 250 Bultaco, Ron Wilson took first 500 Amateur on a Husky, Wes Anderson Jr. pulled off first 250 Amateur again on a Yamaha; Doyle Fields took first in the Open class on the Sonic Weld Triumph, and Eric Jenson was the first 125cc in on a Sachs which he tunes out of his own shop. The 100cc class went off right after the dust cleared from the big b1k~s. Jack Morgan, #1, the man to beat in the 100cc race led from the bomb through the pits after the first loop an d went on to a well deserved win at the finish. All the young chargers are pushing him hard, but he'S still the champ. Jack Froelich on a new Bultaco was second; Jim ' Summers was third. Alan Lund was the first Amateur in on a Bultaco followed by Mike Hays on a Hodaka taking first Novice. Rescue 3 had their hands full again and did a great job as they always do when they are asked to come out and assist in the desert.
