• Cannady's Sachs Slays 'Em At Santa -aria By Donna Earnest Photos by Gary Harrdson SANTA MARIA, CAL. Jan. 18, 1970- 01' Sol mus t be a motocross fan himself because he came out shining for the Lompoc Slo-Pokes Santa Marla motocross. The suns hine broke a week of rain and the drenched course became a sea of slush befor e the end of the day. The soggy track surface took the edge off the advantage of the larger displacement machines but that fact doesn't detract one whit fr om the tremendous ' f eat accomplished by 125cc Sachs rider Gene Cannady who won the combined Expert class leaving highly touted CZs, Maicos and Bultacos i n his wake. Gene won all three motos and wi dened the gap in each r ace. One of the most breath taking battles of the day was deliver ed i n the 250 Novice first division. Suzuki mounted John Gross lni, all 105 pounds of him, and CZ r ider Jack King f ought all day and wound up first and secon d. Another Suzuki rider, Mike Beardsley was close behind In the opening moto, Mike threw a chain and was unable to get off the line in the second moto but came on strong in the third and led all the way down to the last 100 feet. Just before the checkered flag Mike got out of shape and crossed up Jack so Gross1n1 zapped them both to get the overall win. Two fr i endly adversaries, Larry Greer and Vince Clark rode matched Hodakas through a long battle to finish fir st and second after a day of dicing. Two trophy winners got their brass honestly but painfully. Joe Bonnello picked up a f our th in the 250 Novi ce race despite two broken r fbs.Al Davis smacked the wall during practice and broke a toe. He was comforted by a first place trophy in the 360 Senior class. The L ompoc Slo-Pokes have again started point keeping l eading to the awarding of high point trophies in three divisi ons at the end of the year. An earlier starting time and better organization had each heat going off like cl ock - wor k, trophies distributed, bikes loaded and riders and spectators on their way home long before the sun settled in the West .
