Dunford Digs Desert At S.D.V.M.C. Hare'Scrambles Photos and Story by Dick Wright ADELANTO, CAL . Jan. 18, 1970 - To quote the winner Bruce Dunford on a 400 Husky: "That was a rough ninety miles, but everything went my way. I got a good start, dueled It out with Thorwaldson, then took over the lead on the second looP." The race was set to go two Ioops on a 45 mile course. Total entry was 560; the weather was perfect. The .banner dropped, and the big bores headed for the smoke marker five miles out. You could hear the roar f or 15 minutes. It was hard to see who had the lead as the starting line was spread out over a quarter of a mile. One hour later the leader was coming Into the pits. It was Prospector Rich Thorwaldson on a Bultaco, Dunford was second with Tom Muto lh1rd - both on Scuderla tuned Huskys, and both In the AI Baker's Yamaha was the first 250 home and 3rd Overall• .........................................." ••••••" Victors M.C . Then came Tom Poteet's Bultaco being pushed hard by a Al Baker on a Yamaha, both fighting for the first 250cc spot. Dunford made his move on the second lOoP and came .In for the win three minutes ahead of second man Thorwaldson. ThIs was Dunford's first overall win. Al Baker of the Checkers took lh1rd on a Yamaha and first In the 250cc class, followed closely by Tom Poteet on a 250 Bultaco. . Wes Anderson Jr. on a 250 Yamaha took first Amateur; he is a recent transfer from the lOOcc class. Joe Kulek took first 500 Amateur on a C- Z f ollowed across the line' by the first 500 Novice Don GyIve on a Husky. Mike Burke took first open class on a Triumph. The Frito Bandito Don Cortez took second 500 Novice for hls first non-crash ride, but had had to push his Husky the last fifty feet. First 125cc honors went to Roy Barnett on a Yamaha. The 100cc class went off fifteen minutes after the big bikes. It didn' t prove to be a good race for the favorites, as most of them had mechanical problems. The first to drop out was Jack Morgan #1, then Terry Clark #2. First rider Into the pits after the first Ioop was Ken Buckspan, followed by Mitch Mayes. Buckspan came out of the race on the second loop along with last week's winner Jim Summers - both with mechanical trouble. Dave Ekins on a Harley-Davidson moved past Mayes and took the lead. These two battled it out until Mayes repassed Ekins twenty miles out to take the lead and come In for the win on his SS Hodaka. Not bad for a school boy who turned Expert last week. Allen Pepple was second and Ekins was lh1rd. The San Bernardino M.C. had a well manned race course; there were several bad road crossings and wash outs but there were flagmen at most all of them.
