Jan. 18, 1970 - When ~ rarn hits Orange County's Sadd1eback U Park the ground tuns to glue but the real motocross riders love It. Threats of more rain and a less than bombastic pre-race publicity campaign for the ACA's latest motocross kept the entry Ust down from Its usual figure but by measure of fun for the ,riders and spectators It was a smashing success. There was a great deal of excitement In the 125cc class. The lead must have changed sixteen times during the first moto. Dick Frampton (Bul) and Gary .Scr oggtns (Penton) really had It all together. Dick would lead through the mud. Gary would lead through the dry. Gary dropped back in the second and third motos when mud between the fender and tire bogged his bike down causing the engine to load UP. , Carl Cotton (American Eagle) took a first In each 500cc moto, In spite of havIng no first gear. In each moto Carl would take the lead with Larry Nolen (C Z) close behind. Larry suffered Ignition problems and did not finish. The mud got to everyone. Ron Burpo (CZ) dais, " You would be looking good and the next instant you would be crossed ' UP." Ron stayed straight long enough to take second 250 Sportsnian. At the end of the day Dick Frampton (Bul), who won .the 125 Senior go, said, "Yesterday I fried a piston on our club run. I put a new 's et of rings In. The top of the ' piston was so chewed UP, I really was only using one ring." Richard Steek (first 100cc) blew his transmission on his last lap. Richard PhYsically pushed his Honda .90 up and over the muddy hills to take the checkered flag. Summing uP the day, a Churchillian Wes Cooley Intoned, "Never have we run a motocross with so few and had so much fun." VIZORĀ·VU' is full of ''technical advances.
