Sloppy mud was the story of the day at Saddleback Park. Here Is a pictorial 01 some riders' dillerent techniques lor transverslnc the mire.
ORANGE, CAL. Jan. 18, 1970 - When ~
rarn hits Orange County's Sadd1eback U
Park the ground tuns to glue but the real
motocross riders love It.
Threats of more rain and a less than
bombastic pre-race publicity campaign
for the ACA's latest motocross kept the
entry Ust down from Its usual figure but
by measure of fun for the ,riders and
spectators It was a smashing success.
There was a great deal of excitement
In the 125cc class. The lead must have
changed sixteen times during the first
moto. Dick Frampton (Bul) and Gary
.Scr oggtns (Penton) really had It all together. Dick would lead through the mud.
Gary would lead through the dry.
Gary dropped back in the second and
third motos when mud between the fender
and tire bogged his bike down causing
the engine to load UP.
,
Carl Cotton (American Eagle) took a
first In each 500cc moto, In spite of havIng no first gear. In each moto Carl
would take the lead with Larry Nolen
(C Z) close behind. Larry suffered Ignition problems and did not finish.
The mud got to everyone.
Ron Burpo (CZ) dais, " You would be
looking good and the next instant you
would be crossed ' UP." Ron stayed
straight long enough to take second 250
Sportsnian.
At the end of the day Dick Frampton
(Bul), who won .the 125 Senior go, said,
"Yesterday I fried a piston on our club
run. I put a new 's et of rings In. The top
of the ' piston was so chewed UP, I really
was only using one ring."
Richard Steek (first 100cc) blew his
transmission on his last lap. Richard
PhYsically pushed his Honda .90 up and
over the muddy hills to take the checkered flag.
Summing uP the day, a Churchillian
Wes Cooley Intoned, "Never have we run
a motocross with so few and had so much
fun."
