Story and Photo by N.A. Williams WOODLAND, WASH. Jan. 11, 1970-Low ' fog shrouded the Woodland Wash. TT track and ice could be seen on the water nearby but the January 11th race went on and 150 riders raced through the cold and decreased visib1l1ty. At times it was impossible to see the length of the track and riders had a difficult time seeing if someone had gone down in front of them. There were few crashes however, and the races went off at a good pace. The roaring Norton of , Sonny Burres captured the Open motocross ahead of Ed Herrmann and Howard Bushman.Bill Cooks 360 CZ took the Trophy Dash and A Matn in that class and Chuck Joyner got the 250cc honors. Jan. 18, 1970 - Gary Balley and Dick Mann stole the show at the European Motocross held by the Pathfinders Motorcycle Club at Dunlap Cycle Park near Fresno. After heavy rains for a week and rain predicted for the area, the Pathfinders Club expected the worst kind of turnout. Dick Mann arrived and everyone was overwhelmed, but then Gary Balley pulled in to sign up and riders and spectators alike were filled with expectation of the show that was to follow. The fans were not disappointed as Gary Bailey rode and won all three classes on his Sachs, 250 and 360 Greeves and exhibited little sign of fatigue at the ' end of the day. Dick Mann riding his famed Ossa Prototype had bad luck in the first 250 Senior moto by getting stuck in a mud bole when he attempted to jump the same area that he had been clearing all morning in practice. This set him way back in the race. He managed to work his way back up to third but again received the same treatment in the mud hole. In the second moto, Mann won with Gary Balley (Greeves) having the back luck with mud crossings. The third moto would then be the deciding race. The lead changed several times but Balley finally edged out Mann at the last minute. William Saltzman (Husky) of San Mateo was hot on the heels of Mann and Bailey throughout each moto pulling a second in the first and second motes, Saltzman ,unl oaded from his 360 in the open race while in hot pursuit of Gary Bailey. He landed on the front wheel after cresting the 60 mph hill and parted company with the Husky in mid air, but jumped back on his machine after a quick check. CZ mounted Phil Jacobsen, the seven- teen year old from San Mateo, had Gary Balley and William Saltzman to contend with in the Open class and did a terrific job of staying with them during all three motos, Phil got the best of the mud hole and led for a lap when he did a spectacular jump clearing the mud hole completely. George Snider (Matco), veteran of the Indy 500, was in usual winning form for ' _ the first two motos of the Open Junior class but the mud finally caught up with him in the final moto and gave first place to Matco rider Dave Kunkel of Corcoran, Calif. Conditions at the park were near perfeet with the exception of 'the water filled gullies that were included in the course that later turned to very difficult mud holes. The granite base sollprovide the most incredible track conditions seen in a long time. Traction was superb, in fact, Gary Bailey spent a little time after the race trying to figure out how to get the terrain down South.
