Scotsmen Give Masterful Exhibition ' At Miramar Trials , . Story and Photos by G.L. Barton MIRAMAR, CALIF. Dec. i4. 1969- Derek ot Scotland's top trials and motocross rIders, made a surprise appearance at Miramar to rIde the last trIals staged In Southern CaJUornia this ~dgar, one year. Derek doubled up with former Scotsman Jack Ward on Jack's new Bultaco and together were able to take the two top posItions In the Master Class. Derek was awarded a special trophy for his materful exhibItion. In the 32 sections, Edgar lost a mere 15 points whIle Ward rode his usual aggressIve seU and lost a very creditable 24 marks. Wards winnIng ride was also notable In the fact that he fInally took the number 2 plate away fr om Bob Grove. Bob found himseU down two positions on Ward at the end ot the day with Kevin Walker (Bultaco) sandwiched between these two great riders. Top notch Enduro rIder Dave Evans returned to good form on his Sherpa 'T', and took the next posttton with one point more than Grove. In fact there were only flve marks separating these four rfder s, In the Expert DivisIon, super hot Ron O'Hare (Bultaco) continued ' his domI- nance with a loss 29 points and the only clean rIde ot the day In extra difficult section 12. Joe Goodson who has juSt recently switched from Hodaka to Montesa kept plugging away very steadily, finally losing 37 points to Just edge out B111 SmIth (Bultaco) for second by one potnt, Youthful Mark Eggar (Cotton) copped top honors among the Amateur LIghtweIghts with 5 points lost, while his dad Matt (Bultaco) dropped 7. But this potent one-two combination was broken up by Dewayne Blazer (Montesa) with a score ot 6 lost. VIctor Conaway, rIding Bob Emde's AmerIcan Eagle TrIals model to Its first event, walked away with the victory In the intra-11ght class with 15 makrs. Second place went to Doral Eckhardt (Hodaka) who couldn't manage more than 32 polnts, Dave Evan'S daughter, DebbIe, and Dave Carlson both completed the day with zero scores In the Kids class. However the Poms hit back In the very next heat as veteran manager Ken McKInlay shephered home his West Ham team mate Tony Clarke ahead of the much vaunted Char11e Monk-Jack White combination. From then on the scores were almost level. At the Interval break It was 27 apIece and at the conclusIon ot heat 16 the teams were locked together on 48 points. This was followed up In the next and final heat by Queensland champion Jack White who registered a superb victory over Ray WUson and Arnold Haley, the tearaway Eng11sh pair. Then the Kangaroos ra1lled, under the guidance ot the redoubtable Airey. He and Klngstoll_sped home for maximum poInts againSt Clarke and BrItish reserve Howard Cole (replacing McKinlay).
