As uaual everyth1ng went off smootbly 1nsPite of problems tbat would bave completely snowed uoder some of tile otller clubs wIIo bave bigger membershiPs. The major problem was tile fog. You couldn't even see tile bloomln' track. so llgbtweights practice had to be delayed for safety reasons unt11 way late in tile morning. Coacbella decided tIIen aDd tllere tbat tile ouly way to get tile day going was to run everyone on tile short course. This tightened uP tile schedule considerably, but it didn't set too well witll tile big bores. They got a delegation togetller, asked tile dab to let tIIem run on tile long course, pressed some extra flagmen into service, and Jon Mudd duell aeroll the Jump on hll wa)' to a 125 Novice win. r--...."!'"M~"""'_ _ ...... "!"we ntr off~tIIey ... · '!t'!'_-----_ LAST It was almost a solid Kawasaki day in tile ultra llgbtwe1ght divisiOll, witll ouly one rider, Steve Herrera, on a Yamaha in tile 50 class brealdng uP, tile sol1d Green Streaks' wins. B1ll Dobbs won tile 100 Novice Main followed in by tbree more 'Salds ridden by Marty Davis, Jeff Sexton, and Bob Brooks. Doug Mason took tile 100 Expert motos beating out Gary Scott and Troy McKee. But in tbat class, a Kawasald was Steve Nicolls' downfall (pun intended). 10 practice he was trying a Kawasaki out and unloaded heavily. Then be re-appeared briefly on a Hodaka, but later went back to tile Kawasald. Hitting a downed bike, be really went a wallop and ended uP belng taken off for some X-rays. We're pleased to report noth1ng broken, just a severe foot sPrain. Fora wbile it looked l1ke there went tbat ultra-llgbtwe1ghtplate for Steve wIIo has worked so bard for ,it all season as has Tray McKee wIIo 18 now breatb1ng right down Steve's neck after f1D1sh1Dg Sunday. Bob Greenstreet went borne after winning botb the 250 Amateur and tile 3S0 Amateur/E:xpert class. 10 tile 2S0 Amateur class, I wonder how many of tile guys knew tbat Randy Ellis, who ended fUtb, rolled his van twice on tile way out to Perris? The Sidebacks arrived witll a good grouP and proceeded to tear around tile track for a six-)apper winner-lake-all Gal)' Scott Iwltched to hll Sui I... the 250 Expert win. Dec. 14, 1969At tile Motorcycle Riders Association's llrd hillcl1mb held December 14t11 at tile Granite ptt near Jacltsonv1lle, Oregon, 0DI7 seven bikes made it over tile top t1 tile hill to be timed. Two of tIIese were in tbe SOOCc class and tile otller five were in tile Open class. Two of tile Portland Riders Cbuck Hodson aDd Lydab Azcie put on a demonstrUion in an uollmited class. This is a class where tile riders modity tlleir hikes in wbat ever way tIIey tb1nk it will win over anotller bike. The two hikes tbat were used bad extended frames and cba1Ded rear wheels. Both bikes made it over the top, but even though tIIey were mod1f1ed tbeY were unable to defeat tile local machInes wb1cb were timed. A mln1blke hillcl1mb was held during baItt1me tile winners t1 tb1s event are as follows: Darwin Ault age 7 rode biB Honda 160 feet uP tile hill to lake first place. Don Coghill age 8 rode a bome made bike powered by a SOCc Suzuki engine 88 feet uP tile hill to take second place and Ron Clark age 8 rode biB Honda 8S feet uP tile hill to take 3rd., Dick Chambers rode biB 6SOCc Triumph over tile hill staDd1ng on tile seat to round off tile day's events. The out of town spectators who asked to see him ride tile hill in tb1s fashion were quite amazed and showed tIIeir appreciation by giving him a big round of app1&use.
