John (1) Rice tries to squeue plst two other 500 nollY's Greeves. race. Dave Roesch and Tom Rldyard held tile lead with their potent Harleys unt1l tile rock turn on the very last lap, when, as "Crash" said, "I blew It" and, the BSA of Jim Mof11tt and Jim McNeal got by. Lettlng it all bang out should be Imprlnted on the back t1 McNeal's sh1rtl Phewl The Prett;yman/Volenec KawasaId rig endoed spectBeularly with p110t and monkey sa1l1ng l1ke birds but no damage dooe. When one of tIlem came to, tile ambulance driver was maIdng aDldous no1ses and all tile 'backer kept saying wasy, "How 15 tile b1ke? Did we bend it?" It was Lost Angels day In tile Open Novice class with Andy Hernandez on a Expert clISS riders. John cat a third lor the day behind Gary Jones' thumplnc BSA and Jim Con· Norton and Frank Close (Triumph) taking first and second while M1ke Boyle on a BSA came In for third. These gl\fS reallY mixed it UP, which is more than we can say for another heavyweight class, but we'll get to lOOm alter. Gary Jones (BSA) was the man to beat In tile 500 Expert but no one could except for Jim Connolly (Greaves) who woo tile second moto by juSt a baIf-b1ke length. Jobn Rice was back aways In all three as was Cbuck Wheat (Malco) who was deflnitely baving an off-day. He was trying bard but the man and mach1ne juSt weren't blended as they usually are, and he lost a lot of valuable points In his try for the number one heavyweight plate. Screen Actors' Guild cards should go to all the Open Expert class or at least maybe a m1n1ature sandbeg. We kDow all's fair In love, war and racing but honestly you gl\fsl Terry Dorsch (Triumpb), nursing a sore knee, won while the rest of the crew played baPPlly away, although In all cred1t to M1ke Posey, he f1naIIY turned it on In the third moto and showed wbat he could do. We're not going to say that this w1n gave Dorsch the number one over Wheat unt1l we check with steward Sam Crooks. The points are that close, and there's st1ll next week at Adelanto! Events such as the Inter-Am Motocross at Sadd1eback, Callf. offer a nice day of creative race and people watching and are more enjoyable than, say, sports car races as they are more informal and there is less crowding. Bring refreshments, folding chairs, and be ready to enjoy a pleasant few hours In the sun with a setting of mistetched hills, the bikes buzzing like Indignant bees (30 knights a leaping) and colorful people, lncluding yourself, ~ see. Oh, the gondoldsmell'Ofraclngfuell Actually, the men's fashions are more colorful than the girls. The one time standard uniform for men of a white T-shirt and jeans seems to be 'Jutl Racers still wear these, with advertising on the shirts, but they don't reallY offer much scope unless a distinctive bat is worn. There were, however, a number of these combinations at BI'DGESTONf Sales-Senke Barney Tillman·sSPORT CENTER 6027 WIIi Wer B1 vd., E. Los Mceles (~13) 7~3:i23 • SRddleback last Sunday. One I liked was a fellow on a .m1nJ.bl.ke - white shirt and j5ns BUT - a black Or10 Guthrie bat with a blue headbe nd, a circle of blue brilliants, and - fiowers on the top!!! Hats at the races are not, I regret to say, wbat they used to be. Who can compare the magn1f1cent specimens seen at the old Big Bear races with 'those shown today? • There seem to be a number of Orlo Guthrie bats, and a sprlnkllng of Bronson's knit watch-caps. However, an adult wearing a Bronson does reveal something about the wearer. Hey, there goes Sherlock Holmesl I saw a white hunter, a Doughboy campaign bat, sombreros, stovepIpes and paper bats folded I Be yourself. Men, take care not to be ghostlyl There was a blue-green polka dot Nathan Detroit bat with A STRIPED BLUE TSHIRTI What would Playboy say? In general, nylon jackets, imaginative mustaches, sideburns, current hair styles, any kind of slacks or Jeans and colorful tops are worn. I particularly liked one outfit of a green tank top, jeans, band1ebar mustache, and boater bat. Renoir, where ar you? Or better, Toulouse Lautrec? He would have loved the motorcycle races. We bave some notes on women's fashions too. Girls bave it better now than In the old days - clotbeswise it was pretty bleak. Capr15 etc. with a sharP top and a nylon jacket are In the majority - an lnteresting bat livens this uP. One nice outfit was a sleeveless beige shell with an indiv1dua11stic beige bat. However, just about anything goes. 6thers that stood out were two girls In 'Maxi's - one bad a pretty outfit of a Paisley blue-green maxi shirt, a white blouse, green rebozo and shades. I saw a fringed jacket, a lace mant1lla with a qu1lted jacket, and one girl with a purse that bad p1a1nly been a real bunny, Any and all hairdo's are In. For myself, at the next race, I lntend to add an Arlo Guthrie bat to my ensemble of bell bottoms that are six lnches too long, and do my best to enliven the scene. See you there! By the way, who won the race? OnlyBULTACO Steve's Bultaco Open 6 days a week Mon. & Fri. 9-9 others 9-6 7627 Van Nuys Blvd. - Van Nuys, Cal.
