CI> fARGO's flRSl INDOOR RACE BySbariYoung WEST FARGO, N.D., Nov. 22, 1969A cool Wintry llke evening was the setting for the first cycle race at the indoor track here in West Fargo. 41 riders were in competition, as well as a special attraction, mini-bike races for youngsters between the ages of eight and twelve. The m1n1-bike riders led off the evening's events and Terry Tietz of Bismarck ran away with the winner's trophy. Jay Colwell of Gardner was second and eight year old Ivan TaU of Grand Forks was third. All the boysput out great efforts and the crowd cheered them on with much excitement. A couple of the boys were so small tIleir legs wouldn't touch the ground, but this didn't slow them downl 'Ibe fatllers of the boys were just as eXcited, if not more, than the boys. We are stire that tile mini-bike races wtll continue to be a mucb enjoyed part of our indoor races. To help promote cycle racing, which is fairly new in this area, we have added another new feature, a street class. This brought out many new riders, many who bad tIleir ftrst taste of cOD!P8titive racing. The main features were running bot and heavy all evening. It is amazing tile s1d11 put forth in maneuvering tile bike over, and around tallen riders, and tIlere was plenty of that. The track was wet, short and treacherous, especla1ly in tile number two and four turns where deeP ruts bad been worked up witll each lap. As riders went down, others hit the wall, or slid around tIlem trying their best to keep control of their fast moving bikes. Top prize money of $100 was WOlI by Curt Motschenbacber of Moorbeadonbis 250cc KawasaJd Greenstreak. He worked very bard to Win it. Larry Bessey of Schenectady, New York on an Ossa picked up $50 for second and was followed by Corky Atchison of Moorhead on aHarley who receiVed $25. A total of $250· was paid in prize money. Don Boeckel of Beulah won the point battle In tile street class competition, followed by Fargoan Steve Miller and' Chuck Sorvaag of ArgusvWe. Roger Mickelson of Jamestown won tile Sportsman 100 feature, and Gary Grotte of F1n1ey the Sportsman 250 race. We are all looking forward to our weekly Saturday night races at the indoor track at West Fargo. Our promoterracer, Ernie Broklns of Fargo, hope's our entllusiasm grOWS into bigger and better races. The Bushbusters M.C. of Las Vegas bad a great mota cross course wUb four mudhoJes, uPbWs, downh1Us, and tile rest of tile good stuff in a great moto cross course. Grant Thorten looked like he was ready to move up to Amateur as he took a going away win, witll John Damico taIdng second in the 250 Novice. The 250 Amateur Class saw Dennis Benson Win with his ever steady riding style, followed by Mike Drews on a C-Z. Local Number One, BIlly Williams, captured tile 250 Expert Class on a Bultaco. He was followed by Robert Tooley and B111 Hill. The 500 Novice Class saw two really great riders tie for first place. They were Jimmy Johnson and Gary Johnson. Terry Grieble of Vegas Cycle Center took the 500 E:rpert Class on a new Griffon. Robert Lea looked very impressive in second place. Steven Phillips, 10 years old, took tile ftrst mini-bike race ever in Las Vegas, followed by his 9 year old brotller Kietll in second.
