CMC Serves Up Motocross Soup One Race To Go In Seri~·1: Photos and Story by John Shedd CARLSBAD, CAL. Oct. 12, 1969 - It anyone word could describe the CMC's motocross at Carlsbad It would have to be muddy. Stu Peters and Kelvin Franks were UP to their old tricks again and they really pOured the water to the course. It was the most mud and water that Carlsbad has had for sometime and the riders love It. The course layout was the same as the last meet and the addition of many hours of watering made it truly a circus. Five of the six races in the CMC series are now history and with only one race remaining to decide who will win the new Greeves Gritton, Jim O' Neal is out In front by four points. Mike Runyard is second in the pOint standings followed by Jim West, B111 Urban and Tim Hart. O· Neal's four followers are separated by only one pOint, so these positions could easily changed In the final event at Saddleback, but second Is only second and first carries home the Greeves. O'Neal only needs to finish fourth or better In either the 250cc Junior or the 500cc Junior to win the machine and he is a hard man to keep that far back. f ""' .' l' ... .'. . :'.:L$;'" The 500cc Juniors blast 011 the line. Malco rldlls Patrick John (166) De Benedetti and Wayne (691) Hosaka battled all day OVII the soupy and slldly Carlsbad CO"SI. Hosaka finally nosid out Patrick John and Bruee Torbett was third on a Husqyarna. In the backcround. Jim picked up points in Sunday's race by getting his CZ out in front of the 250 Juniors in Division I and taking the win. The Bultaco ridden by D. Rodgers added llP a second in that division. Two C Zs were t1rst and second In the 250 Junior Division II chase. A. Newsome rode his to a win ahead of H. Wurtzel. The 500 Junior clash was a Maclo attalr .with Wayne Hosaka beating out Patrick John DeBenedetti ahead of Bruce Torbett on a Husqvarna. This week It was the 125cc Juniors that received the cash and M. Tripes carried home $50.00 for his win on a Penton. M. Payse picked llP second place money and B. Urban third. I.S.D.T. gold medal winner Lars Larsson was out for the first time since his return from Europe. Lars won the gold medal on a Penton and he wiped out the 125cc competition In the Expert division at Carlsbad by winning all three motos. Lars takes to water like a duck and he really shoed off his smooth riding style In the slippery stuff. Jim Wilson tooIC the 250cc Expert on his Greeves with very little trouble. Jim West was the first man to the first corner In the first two legs but Wilson found his way by on the first laP each time and from then on he was untouchable. The final moto produced the best racing. Bill Silverthorn was largely responsible for that as he chased Wilson around and around very closely but he never made a serious challenge. Tom Rapp t1n1shed second behind Wilson in the first two legs, but in the last one he became tangled with some others at the start and had to come from dead last and work his way through the pack to f1n1sh third. The 500cc Expert class also had Wilson out in front, but this time he really had his work cut out for him. Mark Blackwell grabbed the lead in the first moto, and sUed around like the win with Tim Hart giving chase. Back in the pack John DeSoto, Lars Larsson and Jim Wilson were working their way forward and before long It was Lars in front and Wilson pushing. Jim found the way by and took the win. The second ,moto was Wilson'S all the way with Lars finishing second, Jim West third (his first ride In the 50Qcc class on a Matco) and Mark Blackwell fourth. Larsson was not to be d"nied In the lad race Rnd he led It, from start to finish with Wilson close behind all the way. October 19 Is the final race In the CMC series and It will be atSaddleback. From here It looks like Jim O'Neal may win himself a Greeves Gritton but one little slip and It may be Mike Runyard or Jim West. (Results on page 20) Mark B~ckwell lea,s off the "face" at Carlsbad. This spot was a heart stopper because riders who Jumped out OYII the trail had to Sit up quickly for a sharp left-hander near the bottom. The berms that built up In the muddy turns helped the cornerlnc style.
