By Bill Harmer DEHESA INDIAN RESER VA TION, SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Sept. 14, 1969 - Carl Byers of San Diego recuPerated sutficientIy from his last week'S spectacular crash at South Bay Speedway to win the hoUy contested 250Cc Expert races here today. He turned back such sparkling star riders as Larry Collie, Wayne Hosaka, Kevin Stafford, Wayne Clarke, Bill Silverthorn, and Ray Vanderpool to chalk uP the win which may give him the highest point standing for the year. Ray Vanderpool, riding one of Pete Pistone's Bultacos, captured second spot. Riding the South Bay Triumph-entry, Earl Barker displayed improved riding ab1l1ty in winning top poinis in the Open Expert series, finishing in front of Triumph mounted Wayne Hosaka. The day's largest class of entries was the 100cc Novice division whichrequlred three heat races and two semis to determine the Main Event quallflers. Hodaka mounted D. Malcomb led the main event finishers, followed by Gary Johnson on a Kawasa1d. In the 125cc division, first place was a contest between two Yamaha pUots, Perry de Palmer and Jack Fleg1e with de Palmer coming out on toP. Wayne scoops up a lilt Ie Dehesa soli with his face guald. It takes a lot to pass Carl (12) Byers on the out side. Those Elperts do like to pack It tight. Bill (6) SII.erthorn looks like the Inside man for the mo· ment, but he slipped back to third behind Carl (12) Byers and Ray (2) Vanderpool. The 100cc Expert class drew a small but highly skilled field of riders. Defimding point champ, Hodaka mounted Jim McGuire, was bard pressed by Moto-X Ace Bill Sllverth_orn, who was on one of the new Kawasald 100's, and narrowly won the series. Larry Collie, riding for.Beach Cycle, chose to enter his new 100Cc Kawasald in the 125cc Expert race, which he won easily ahead of Yamaha mounted' Earl Barker and Sachs jockey, D. Cochran. It is d1ff1cult to believe that a 238 pound Motor Jockey can go so fast, but Big Bob Larson showed how it is done by ridl,ng his 650Cc Triumph to victory in the Open Novice Motos. Norton mounted Mike Konshak showed continued improvement by coming in second. In the 250Cc Novice fracas, Kawasaki pilot R. Anson, after a heat race spill, came back to capture the Main beautiful1y. Karl Collie, riding a Yamaha was an impressive second. At the end of each series of races a Junior race for kids 12 years and under was held with a limit of 90cc's on their. bikes. Twelve year old Brad Hendershott riding a little Yamaha was declared the winner. As another added attraction, 22 year old Lana Paige of Torrance, California, entered' her 650 Triumph in the Open Novice races. It cauSed much the same reaction among the bike riders as did the invasion of horse racing by women jockeys. Her District 37 Sportsman's Credentials were in order, however, so she was allowed to ride with the men. The Hi-Boots, as USual, put on a very enjoyable program. The course was in beautiful condition and the faster bikes were lapping in the high 30's (seconds). The next TT Scrambles in the San Diego area ·will be at Autodrome de Tijuana on September 21st.
