Huntington Hunts For New Turn By Al Snow A Suzuki rider salls .cross the bow of two more raclls at Hunlln&ton Beach. Many "cular rldlls wile swprlsed by t!II new twn Ihr•. I MO OReye I c HUNTINGTON BEACH, CAL., Sept. 14, 1969 - Surprise was the word trom regular riders when they came Into turn three for the flrst l1me today, It was stretched out another 30 feet with a slight off-camber. With perfect weather, the 100 Novice found a three-way duel with Rollie Clark, Ed Newcomb and Steve Stanfield. Rollie finally gave UP the trophy to Ed and Steve had to settle for third. The 125-175 Novice Main battle was fought over by the two heat winners with Steve Tinsley grabbing the lead away from Rodd Foster In lap three and holding it to the checkered flag. Vincent Zlne proved the speed secrets on his DTI with a wire to wire heat win and then came back In the 250 Novice Main and worked UP from third to take over the lead on the fourth lap. Dennis RalPh and Ray Wunno had to hang on and watch Vince stretch out his lead. What haPpened In the comhined 100 to 250 Am/EXP. hasn't been explained by the 250' s. Dean Butterfield flnally got his DTl running In the third moto to take the lead on the third lap. Greg Wickham on his 100 Suzuki had control of flrst two motos' to take the overall win. Ron Taylor on a 125 Yamaha and Kirk Redding on a 100 Kawasaki held second and third respecl1vely. . The combined big bore Nov:ice race was led home hy Keith Potter on his Montesa with a second and two first pla.ces. Dave Luna (BSA) sbowed the old 1-2- 3 could beat a second and two thirds turned In by Fred Wells (Hon). The Am/ Exp. bash was a tight contest from Mike Chamberlain's capture of the lead on turn 1 lap 1 from Arvil Sparks (with Mike outside the groove somehow fI.nd.1ng traction). Mike held that lead by Inches unl1l the last turn when Don Hough (BSA) came under to snatch thatcheckered11ag. The 2nd moto lead was grabbed off the line by Dick Lewis (Tri)-a new big-bore rider - and held to the wire. Mike Chamberlain settled for second pIace and Don Haugh came back atter a had spill into the l1res to come across the line behind Wayne Rutledge. Don's bruises did not affect his determinal10n and to prove it, he came back to take the third moto and edge out Mike by 69 points for overall win. Looks like Chamberlain is getting some stufer compel1l1on and this can slow his total Park Points down and make a better target for the other riders to shoot at before the end of the season. The top ten riders In point standings as of September 1 are: Mike Chamberlain 655 Pts.
