Rick • By Mike Capallte LOS ANGELES SPORTS AREAN, Sept. 13, 1969 - With all the suspense of a Hollywood script, the California State Speedway Championship went right down to the wire last Saturday night and It could have been anybody'srace. To avoid the posslbWt;y of tie at the last minute, the promoters decided against running the main events as handicap events but instead to run them scratch and have the -points earned in these races count for the championship. In the Trophy Dash, Itlooked like Steve Bast was getting ready to take on all comers as he jumped into the lead with Woods right behind him and Sonny Nutter In third. No matterhow)lard Rick Woods tried, he couldn't catch Steve as BasI took the cbeckered flag for the trophy dash, It was announced that he bad set a new track record of 37:30. On hand to present Steve with his trophy was the very lovely Miss Vicki Holl1wayandcomingto the infield with her to congratulate Steve was Ken Berry who portrays Sam·in Mayberry RFD and previously was the officer in the television series' F Troop' • . . . The tension could be felt as the A main pulled to the line. Steve Bast was high point man, four points ahead of Woods with 38, but he was only two points ahead of his brother Mike Bast who had 36 points. Last man in theA main was Larry Heinselman with 34 points. So It was evident that the championship could either be won by Mike Bast If he won the main and Steve finished fourth or they could tie If Mike won and Steve got third or If Steve placed on notch below his brother or finished any place ahead of him, Steve would win it. As the starting gate went uP, It was Rick woods and Steve Bast into the corner together and really mixing It uP with Woods coming out In the lead out of the corner and riding like there was no tomorrow. Larry Helnselman moved into the second place position and It looked for a minute like Steve was going to be in trouble as Mike was moving uP on him also. Helnselman all of a sudden got an unexpected bit of traction and lost the machine out from under him as Mike Bast passed brother Steve and moved Into second sPOt. By finishing in this order, It left only one point separating each of the toP four men, this Is from a total of sixteen races for each of them, so you will have to admit that these are Indeed the champions. Woods received a large troPY for his A main win aDd then Steve Bast went to the Infield to collect his beautiful State Championship.. Trophy and to have his picture taken,.
